Prednisone acne

It's hormonal acne caused by the way prednisone messes with your cortisol levels and thus your insulin levels and your other hormones. If you can fight the cray cray cravings and be really mindful about what you eat and managing your blood sugar with a balanced diet, that will help keep some of the hormones in check, and probably help some, though you probably can't prevent it.

My other suggestion would be to just take extra good care of your skin with a gentle face wash (I like Purity by Philosophy) and then an oil-free moisturizer with Salicylic acid. I like Neutrogena Oil-Free Facial Acne Moisturizer With Salicylic Acid. Spot treat with benzoyl peroxide, but do NOT use a benzoyl peroxide wash or put it all over your face.

I've been on prednisone for 7 weeks and while I have no acne, I gained 15 pounds (that I had intentionally worked my ass off to lose before UC) because of the intense cravings. However, I have dealt with a hormonal disorder my whole life that, if left unchecked, causes insane acne, and the endocrinologist was spot-on when she told me that I could reduce most of the acne (not all of it, cause I get a few zits around my period) if I managed my blood sugar better.

Last time I was on pred, I broke out all over my face. Weird areas too, where I never break out. I get pimples on my chin or hairline, but this was literally everywhere. Topicals do not work for me unfortunately, they don't make it worse, just don't do much of anything. Usually I need antibiotics or hormones to get mine under control. My skin was such a mess, I swore at that time, I would do anything before going back on prednisone ever again. It was so bad that you could still see light marks years later. I think a dermatologist is a good idea if it's really bothersome, but ultimately, for me, the only thing that got me back to normal was getting off, and staying off prednisone. I am sorry people have asked. it will get better soon enough, just takes time.
