... on your GI?

I'm feeling a little guilty because I started seeing a second GI without the current GI knowing. I originally sought a second opinion, but I'm liking the 2nd GI better (I told the 2nd GI that I wasn't planning on seeing original GI anymore).

But the thing is, I'm planning on sticking with original GI just in case.

I know that I'll have to make a choice at some point, but it's nice having both now.

My primary care doc is also a GI. I see an IBD specialist about my IBD/jpouch, he is more qualified because my case is so severe.

I talk to them both about my IBD and tell them what the other one said; everyone is very happy with it and I get no pushback from either of them.

My primarycare doc is also a family friend.

I don’t feel that I am “cheating” on either of them, I have the upmost respect for both of them.

Sort of. I don’t dislike my gastro but a couple of things frustrate me about her and I don’t have a lot of confidence in her. I asked my GP for another referral and I’ll be seeing the other gastro at the end of October. At that point I’ll decide who to stay with. I do feel bad though because the one currently treating me is nice enough, but nice doesn’t necessarily give me confidence in her treatment.

I liked many things about my original gastroenterologist, but I kept getting frustrated with him and I would get subtle hints from other providers that maybe he wasn't their first choice for me. My PCP had sent me to his practice group years before I developed UC and the GI to whom she had referred me was on vacation so they assigned me to my guy, and then when I went back for UC, the practice group kept me with my guy as a matter of policy.

So it took me a long time to get up the nerve to switch but I did and I'm glad I did. The stuff that was a problem with my former GI is definitely not a problem with my new one.

Sara14: Thank you for writing that, I really do appreciate it. I've always admired your frankness on this forum.
And of course everyone else who shared because you've proved that trusting one's instincts is indeed ok.

While there might be something to be said of so called "standardized / protocol" treatment, I wonder what and how much might have been underwritten by pharma/insurance.

Uc is a lifelong illness and you need a good doctor whom you trust, who listens, and who's a good sounding-board to bounce treatment ideas off of (weigh the pros and cons) and comeup with a solution together. If he/she isn't a good match on the aforementioed points, it might be time to have a difficult-talk (I've thought this through and believe you should treat other patients and not me) and start seeing other gasteroenteroligists (it isn't you, it's me really lol).
