OT......Doc Retirement gift

My GP of 29 years is retiring (stressful for me) and I need ideas for a thoughtful gift.
Any suggestions would be helpful!

One of those "Colin The Colon," stuffed animal-style large intestines? I believe colin has a smile on his face lol.

Don't worry, you're uc-street-smart and will tell any new gasteroenterologist how YOU should be treated ;-)

I've switched doctor's twice in the last couple years against my will (moving to a different state, now a retirement). You'll do fine smile

A while back I asked a shrink/cousin-in-law of mine what to give my wonderful gyn-onc surgeon, who was relocating to another state. CIL replied in the line of Keith's recommendation!!!!!! She said that it means a lot to most doctors to receive notes of appreciation in a patient's own words. Maybe you can also find an extra-special coffee mug, paper-weight, or plant to accompany the note. ***I totally understand your boo-hoo feelings!!!!! / Old Hat (38 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

It's my GP, not GI (that was 5 years ago, and thankfully have an equally great GI now).

I don't want to get her anything med related.....female and an awesome doctor. I have no clue, and only a week to make the decision.

I will definitely do a personalised note, but wanted a little something to go with it. As well, I need something for her assistant who has been amazing.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions to consider...I'm really stressed about it! LOL!

I add my vote for a heartfelt note from a longtime patient saying things only you can say. "When I first met you X number of years ago who knew it would last so long ...... thank you for ........I most appreciate your ....... If you have a specific touching or funny thing to personalize it add that.

Many marriages don't last this long. Maybe you are her longest term patient. Maybe you have lasted longer than HER marriage. Depends on her sense of humor of course. Sincerity is never wrong.

I am an artist and when a doctor 15 years ago fixed a serious problem I made a small painting on paper just the size of the card and attached it to the outside of the notecard. Sunflowers and sky, nothing personal (or god forbid a body part).

edit to add: I really like the personalized coffee mug suggestion. Everyone needs a coffee mug.

I really like that you want to give her something. I am bad at thinking of gift ideas so I understand your stress. Of the suggestions I've read I think a small plant sounds nice (along with a personal note of course). As for coffee mugs, I know how many coffee mugs I have, I just hate getting any because it means I have to get rid of another one, I don't have enough room for all the coffee mugs I have. My SIL loves to buy coffee mugs so every birthday and Christmas I have to tell her NO COFFEE MUGS.

The only other idea would be some really fancy expensive chocolates - she could share them with her staff. Or if you are a baker, you could bake something nice that she can either take home or share with the staff.

How about some premium coffee beans for all of the coffee mugs that you expect your GP to receive as gifts?

I try to put some thought into gifts, the number one criteria is that I want someone to use the gift OFTEN and that it reminds them of me.

My sister does not need anything, she lives in a small apt in NYC so I can't really get her something tangible. So the last few years for her birthdays I have saved up all of my coins for the year and I take them to the coinstar and get her a starbucks gift card that she uses for coffee for a few months.

A small giftcard to a coffee shop (starbucks or dunkin donuts) is always a nice gesture too.

You're right she might get a dozen coffee mugs for the retirement and one can only use so many at once.

Plants are nice, if she likes taking care of them (I do but some people don't like spending the time watering, tending/etc.). Some of us have the opposite of a green thumb and kill everything they set eyes on lol.

Scratch tickets can be like giving a gift of nothing at all if they aren't winners.

Good ideas and suggestions....a plant is nice too. Oh my thoughts struggle....gift cards are good, but does she drink coffee, hmm.

I'll be out and about tomorrow after an eye appt, and hopefully Ini can come up with something. Being a hairdresser and access to products, that could be something, or mani-pedi. But where....omg, i do mine myself.

Will let you know what I decide....
