Wonder if anyone could give me some advice. Does Mesalazine have an anticoagulant effect in the same way as Aspirin? I know it comes in a similar catagory of drugs. I have some dental work in the offing and am wondering about extractions and bleeding. I am currently on 4 grams Pentasa Granules and 2 grams Salufalk Foam Enema per day and certainly dont want to stop my medication at the moment.
Having looked online I have found conflicting views but no firm evidence one way or another. Has anyone else on a fairly large dose of a 5ASA had to have a dental extraction?

"Does Mesalazine have an anticoagulant effect in the same way as Aspirin?" No, I do not believe so. Being chemically-similar but with noted structural differences (as aspirin and mesalamine are) produces dramatically different affects on the body. Mesalamine is 90% topical, so very little of it would affect your mouth.

Second, most UC patients actually clot a lot faster and easier than most of the general population. It involves the enlarged size of our RBCs and their irregular sizes, they block cuts well. If you were to look at your MCV and MCH values in any of your bloodwork you'd be on the high end (or maybe even slightly above normal range) for those things, which is expected of UC patients. In fact, we're much more prone to blood clots from this.

No...i was checked before major surgery and the result was good coagulation.

Make sure you aren't on supplements like ginger, vitamin E, fish oil, ginko, garlic, etc

I've never had a problem with dental work due to mesalamine use. Several years back I did need an upper premolar extraction due to suddenly infected periodontal cyst; everything went well-- except that oral surgeon was alternately working on a wisdom tooth extraction in another cubicle & left me alone in the chair with just gauze packing in my operated site for about 10 minutes. When he & his assistant returned to my side my wound was already leaking blood, but that was due to lapse in his care, not to my UC med. I did 3 subsequent surgeries for dental implant with a different oral surgeon & things went well all around, plus this 2nd OS even phoned me at home some hours post-surgery to check on my recovery, a standard procedure of his.
