What’s normal with salafalk enemas

HI everyone,

I haven’t been in here in years. Was doing well and also trying to stay away from the internet and reading things bc it caused more anxiety in me.

I’m having a start of a flare. Not too bad yet. I’m on my regular 9 salafalk a day and just been prescribed one salafalk enemy nightly. My question is;

This morning when I ha my BM it was coated in white. It was definitely the enema. Is that normal. Do that mean it wasn’t high enough? As well, my stool was looser than normal. It was formed at first then looser and looked more mucousybthan without the enema.

I’m pretty nervous about not getting this flare under control. There was no blood today but I had some and a few days ago which triggered me to know this was a flare. Also have increased mucous and some abdominal soreness especially left side b

I always felt that that anxiety that goes along with UC is almost as bad as the UC itself.

How long did the doc say for you to use the enemas? What dosage?

Normal.....I do suggest you taper to a maintenance schedule.

You don't become dependant on the enemas....stool will always be covered with some enema, so please know those both are facts.

Any urgency or some discomfort when having a bm? How many bms a day?

Since you weren't on any rectal meds till this flare...i suggest stay on the month or longer of nightly enemas.

I'd do the full month of the enemas as prescribed. As for tapering, do every other day for a few times. Then do every third day for a few times. You can discontinue then or go weekly for a couple weeks, if you want. No real absolute tapering schedule, always some variety. In the end, just make sure your symptoms do not get worse as you reduce the meds. Should that happen, go back to daily.

Daily enemas here since 2012. I do what works. Not the end of the world lol.

Oh and btw, excessive gas is a part of the healing process. Annoying to toot and toot all of the time, but you get the whole package including that lol. As you continue recovering you should go back to normal gas levels.

It’s a week into the salafalk enemas almost. Definite improvement. Although I have. A bit of a virus so I’m feeling a bit off and not sure if slight nausea is a side effect?

I do have some yummy soreness here and there still. Not sure if that’s UC of just normal tummy changes through outbthe day as I’ve become super-hyper alert over any change or feeling in my digestive system 😐

I’ll keep chugging along. Still1 BM in morning after waking. No blood that I see. No mucus that I see. Solid. Today a bit softer but I am fighting a virus that all my students and lots of teachers here have. And of course my own 3 kids are sick.

So I guess since I’ve been on salafalk oral for so long the nausea wouldn’t be a result of the salafalk enemas? I’m also still thinking it’s a virus. 2-3 days nauseous on and off. 1 week salafalk enemas. I also at times have acid reflux so nausea and reflux also go hand in hand for me.

I will stay on the enemas and likely always do 2 a week once I taper in a couple months.

Not regularly on any acid reducers. I was until my 3rd pregnancy. Have been off almost 2.5 yrs now. I take the occasional Zantac if I feel the acid starting.

Nor anti spasmodic though. Haven’t needed in the past.

I felt better today with my aches and nausea and then in the evening nausea has returned. If I’ve been on salafalk oral for years with no issues, does that mean it’s not the salafalk enemas and a virus (like lots of ppl have around me),
or acid?
I’ve been doing well except today had an episode of cramping and tiny little soft bm in pieces. I think it was related to some anxiety I was feeling at the time though.

Also, how much is too much mesalamine? I’m on 9 oral pill and 1 enema of 4g a day.

Update from 2 weeks in.

I have had no blood or mucous. I wasn’t having much to begin with but I noticed blood and immediately started enemas. The mucous was in and off and I guess I should have clued into that earlier.

Anyways, it’s been 2 weeks nightly salafalk enemas. BM once a day in morning. Usually well formed. Here and there softer but I guess that normal for all people in the world right? It’s annoying to over analyze you poop to the point where a softer fluffier poop makes you uber paranoid.

I don’t have any pain really. Gassy when I wake up in the mornings.

I see my GI in 2 weeks after being in enemas a full month. Hoping that I’m still good and can taper slowly.

Regarding stool and consistency, any reassurance on consistency and variation on different days? I ask hubby and he says his is all over the map. He doesn’t have uc. Some days solid, some days fluffy, some days really loose....depends on his food and other things.

I still have random nausea that I think is my gerd sneaking back on me.

My stools are always softer, because I have hummus with apples, carrots and whatever daily. Different when I don't and depending on what I eat as well on any given day.

So, you know stools change, no blood and you are improving.....on enemas, and a month nightly is a fair go. If all is good, no extreme gas or urgency or constipation at that point, start the taper at every second night for a month. If all is good, then do every 3rd night....

It's a learning and nonstatic process. But I stress that you find a maintenance and not go off them completely.....ever.
