How to locate experienced surgeons for surgery

My son, 18 is now being referred for surgery. I would like to know how to locate surgeons who are highly experienced in this type of surgery and the options available. We are located in Charlotte NC area, but would be willing to travel. This is all new, just want to make sure he has the best care.

Start with your GI’s office and see who they recommend. I’d contact your local CCFA chapter and ask them. Take a look at jpouch.org and ask for recommendations. You’re probably going to end up at a Teaching/University hospital.

Your son is going to feel so much better and his QOL is going to improve. I felt so much better after surgery.

Thank you for that information. He has been researching on his own, and is thinking of the pouch option. Any insights or advise on this is greatly appreciated!!

Going in most of us fear or did not want an ostomy bag. You’ll find that most of us found out that living temporarily with an ostomy bag not as bad as we expected.

All of it is worth it in the end. It’s a tough surgery(s) to recover from.

Not sure how much u want to travel but New York Presbeterian was great.I just had the 3rd surgery in August.Dr Shukla my surgeon is a perfectionist who cares about every concern u may have.Bentley hotel is right down block from hospital which i stayed at day before each surgery.NYP has a colorectal floor for only colorectal patients.My whole experience was great.Wherever u go be prepared,write all questions down.I had 2 consultations and i choose Dr Shukla after meeting him plus you can google his name and there are videos of him speaking.Good luck

I got a recommendation from my GI's office, but I also went for another opinion from a surgeon who was referred through my insurance company. Both were great actually, but I went to the one with more experience.

The ones I went to come up there for my area.

You definitely want a colorectal surgeon with a lot of experience.
