Have you ever been in the awkward situation where you have been at a friend's house and they didn't have enough toilet paper? what did you do?

I once went to someone's house and the toilet paper roll was almost empty. I had very bad bloody diarrhea and the little bit of paper was only good for one wipe which was barely enough to clean myself. When I came out of the bathroom I told the lady who lived there that there is no more toilet paper. Instead of saying "OK no problem I'll refill it" or something like this, she asked me "Are you wasteful?" I don't remember if I told her that I currently have bloody diarrhea. I hope I did. I wasn't the only guest in her house at this time so I'm sure I wasn't the last one to use the restroom.

When I went to Nicaragua I made it a habit to always bring a roll of toilet paper. And I'm so glad I brought it. I was flaring and some people simply didn't have toilet paper (how do they clean up?). I went to a waitress and asked her in Spanish why she didn't have toilet paper and I needed it urgently. I was upset. After that I brought toilet paper myself everywhere I went.

If you expect guests I think it makes sense to have enough toilet paper, soap and towels available.

One time I went to McDonald's instead going to the hosts bathroom because I saw they didn't have enough toilet paper and I feel like a fool for asking for more toilet paper because of the "wasteful" comment people have made.

It also happens that I clog the toilet and I feel so guilty. I don't know how to handle it and I have a nervous breakdown. I lock myself into the bathroom and try my best to clear it. The first time it happened to me in the US I had to look up the word "clog" to explain what happened.

What is your experiences when going over to other people's houses? Did you have any blunders like me? How did you handle it?

I usually carry a few individually packed wet wipes in a jacket pocket or a pant pocket if I remember, especially if I am going somewhere where I know there's not a great toilet situation, like a concert or event. Of course at a friend or family members home, I would expect there to be extra paper somewhere in the bathroom. I've never run into a situation at a friends house where I ran out and couldn't find some under the counter. Thank goodness for that. I would seriously have to yell out for someone in desperation and hope they don't tell all the guests. Clogging, I always hope for a plunger, but I personally do not have one. I know I am playing with fire, but really, my situation isn't that formed, so the chances of a clog being brought on by me, is fairly low. Now that I said this, I am probably doomed. The worst is when someone else clogged, or left an odor, and and you're the unlucky person to follow them.

Im a contractor and mostly do residential work here in New York.Before surgery it wasn't always easy,lucky for me here in NY there are plenty of fast food joints so always tried to empty out before going to house.But i always hoped we would be working close to a bathroom and on most occasions we were.Always had a 5 gal bucket in Van and plenty of toilet paper on hand.Oh lord those days are tough but surgery fixed that problem thank God

In a lot of countries you need to carry your own TP -- it's not provided and people are expected to bring their own. I travelled through South America and Southeast Asia and this was the case. This was pre-UC, but I still always had a roll in my bag. It's odd to us in the US, Canada and some other Western countries.

I've never not found extra paper under the sink or in a bathroom cabinet, either. I will use tissues if there are some in there and I can't find more TP. I will call out if needed. I am open about my UC, so if I am flaring, I will discreetly let my host know that I may bolt to the bathroom out of nowhere, but not to worry about it, and that I am fine. At first I didn't do this and people were quite worried, and thought that the food made me sick or something.

Thankfully, I have never stopped up a toilet at someone's house, but I did it at a hotel and was soooo embarrassed that I left the room after calling down and asking them to send someone up. If I think it's going to be a major TP trip to the bathroom, I will flush in the middle.

I keep extra TP within my wallet and it has saved my bottom on more occasions than I can count. Whether pooping in the bushes along a roadside, or in an awful bathroom that's out of toilet paper.

If all else fails: You might have UC if you walk in a bathroom with socks, and leave without them smile

I dont have those issues so much nowadays as I'm taking Humira. I do however always carry a small tiny pack of wet wipes and a toilet roll when I have to go to the local hospital. In the waiting area where people sit to be called in to see their doc is a huge metal toilet roll holder. So, if you need to use the toilet before entering the toilets (in front of everyone) you have to take as much toilet roll as you think that you will need!! before entering😁

Oh god, if only those people could experience what we do for even a day. This disease definitely gives you a new perspective and makes you more considerate of others. Some people really just live in their own world and have zero idea that other people (especially those that look "healthy") have different needs than they do.

Good to know I had no idea. But that's why I think it's a good idea to travel and see different countries and cultures. I'm from Germany and live in the US now and in both countries toilet paper is always provided no matter where you go. We have it quite comfortable.

Yea it scarred me for sure. As if living with UC isn't embarrassing enough, I'm even more embarrassed now.

My wallet has a divider in the center, one side meant for currency and the other for checks. I take an arm's length of toilet paper off of the roll, and lay it flat on a table. Two-squares of tp in length is about the same length as currency and fits neatly within my wallet's check area. So, I count two squares, fold it at that perforated seam, count two more squares fold it over again, etc etc. End up with a stack of tp that's 2-squares wide, and as tp isn't very thick I can store a fair amount of it for emergencies. I never go far outside the house without my wallet, and it makes tp always available to me when I am out and about.

You can also get compact 75-sheet toilet paper rolls without the bulky cardboard center. They' come in a plastic dispenser that keeps it dry. They're meant for camping/backpacking, and easily fit in a pocket, purse, or backpack. You can find them in the camping section of most department stores. A couple examples:

I've never had the issue clogging up a toilet. Especially while having diarrhea, but I make sure that I only use 1-2 sheets (regular thickness TP not the thin stuff at a lot of public places) to wipe. Since diarrhea can take a lot to clean up, you want to make sure you either flush in the middle if you do use a lot of TP or start being very sparring with how much you use.
