oops Sorry 3Time..I had a colonoscopy two weeks ago due to bad flare. Doctor had me admitted straight from colonoscopy. First foot and a half of colon was in really bad condition. Stayed a week and FINALLY got out. Doing much better now; going from about 15 urgencies a day to around 5 with enough warning to let me LEISURELY get to the restroom. Am having a problem with getting my potassium level up. Even with IV potassium...they BURN!!..level never came up above 2.4. Kidneys are fine and the diarrhea is gone; so more bloodwork etc is coming. Best of luck to everyone. This is certainly a 'no fun' journey. Have appointment today with my gastro doc to discuss a different biologic I think. NEVER give up!!!

Surgery is tomorrow. My new employer suddenly decided not to offer me the health plan I needed so I'm trying to do cobra but I hope my insurance will still show active tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to the loop ileostomy.

Hey each step comes with challenges.Remember you will be home soon so each day you take baby steps and it gets easier.Nothing after surgery compares to UC when its flareing.I tried not to complicate something that will have challenges,you'll be fine.Good Luck

Andrina,

Good luck tomorrow. remember to order free supplies from the ostomy companies. Some of the things that I used with my Loop were a belt, protective barrier sheets (first thing down and protects your skin), and magnum bags for at night for the first few weeks. The larger bags allowed me to sleep through the night.

Sorry to hear about the insurance issues. Are you covered? Will Cobra cover this?

That's great that you were able to take the next step. I know you were concerned about insurance. The 3rd step is the easiest and the least involved. Once you're through step 2, you're SOOOOO close.

Cobra will cover this. I had my first surgery with a cobra (different plan). I was able to enroll in cobra about 2 hours ago. Now I can go in not stressing about it.

I still have the flat wafers and I sampled some other stuff you recommended but I don't know how to use it. Since I don't know how my stoma will be I will have the nurses show me how to do everything. I asked if I need to bring my supplies and they said I don't.

Sounds good. I let nurses and visiting nurses show me the way. They gave me Hollister in hospital and I stayed with them and they worked fine. Good luck with all

When should I expect output? It hasn't had any output yet should I be concerned? Only blood.

It could take a little while, like more then a day. You didn’t eat, you were given major anesthesia, you are on pain killers and your intestine is in shock from the surgery.

Are you up and walking? That helps with output.

I love the belt! I didn't bring it with me as they put on a convatec bag for now. Does hollister have a magnum bag? Do you have a link so I can sample it? 😊

Yes I walked yesterday which was the day of the surgery and today I got up three times and walked. I want to walk one more time today.

My belly is very sore of course so I can't stand up straight yet. I have gas pain in my shoulder which makes it hard to breath.

I fainted on my first walk today because I have orthostatic intolerance. The second and third walk went better. I'm trying to take as little pain meds as possible too to help my bowels wake up. I'm still on a catheter and a drain but they already took away the oxygen and the leg compression machine.

Are things moving? Mine didn't start instantly either. I don't think I was able to walk the day of surgery though. Do you have a catheter? I always hated trying to get up with all those attachments and the drains. What a pain in the butt (literally). You are very close to getting reconnected. I hope your loop is well behaved.

Yes I have a catheter and I hope it gets removed tomorrow. I just did my fourth walk for today. I finally started having output about 2 hours ago! So happy! Yes I'll try to get reconnected in 2 months.

Nice and slow. Recovery takes time. The walking is great. Eat small portions. Your doing great. Andrina where did u have surgery??

Sending many well-wishes + cyberhugs! You are definitely a brave trooper, Andrina! / Old Hat (38 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Congrats! Recovery is slow but you will get through it. Rest easy and keep up with the walks, they totally helped me (maybe even more mentally then anything). Just stay away from the cream of wheat! 😉

Today they took out the rod, changed the bag with me, took out the catheter and the drain. I'm also no longer hooked up to the IV anymore.

Yes definitely staying away from it. Haha And yes I started walking in the day of the surgery.

Keith it seems if u can pee,poop,walk and eat solid food then u can go home. My stays were 4-4-3 days each. I would of got out sooner on first 2 surgeries but couldn't pee on my own yet that's y I did without painkillers as much as possible. They were binding everything up or slowing it down. Little drive thru surgery. I have customer who is an Anestesiologist. He said staff infections is big reason they want u out of hospital and cost of course. Stitch em up and get em out
