Having had a couple of instances of seemingly red urine splashed around the toilet I did a bit of experimenting and found that it is Sodium Hypochlorite (household bleach) that causes this effect if you are taking mesalazine. If you have cleaned your toilet with bleach and then take a pee you will find that depending on amounts of bleach and amounts of Mesalazine you are taking the toilet water will vary from pink/dark red/purple. I did eventually find references to this after some minor panicking and proved it myself by passing urine into a flushed toilet and then adding household bleach. Voila - purple pee!
The only other problem I am left with now is how to effectively get rid of the small lumps of wax that adhere to the toilet pan - presumably as a result of also using suppositories. Wonder whats happening long time in my drains???
