Hi I am new to this site. I am looking to talk to anybody who had a colectomy and had/has a leaking rectal stump. I have so many questions and concerns. Hoping somebody can reach out with their experience. Thank you.

Hi there I had a rectal stump for 7.5 weeks. It's normal that it leaks. I passed mucus and blood. It even looked like stool and I was very worried. However I called the nurse and she said it was perfectly fine. It is normal to still bleed because the rectum is where ulcerative colitis is active the most. When will you have the take down?

Hi. Thank you for your response. Do you mean having to use the bathroom and expelling blood/ mucus?
What I mean by leaking recital stump is leaking through the incision or an abscess that developed by the incision. Is this what happened to you?

No I never had an abscess. I mean using the bathroom almost as if you had to poop. If you have an abscess you should be seen by your GI or surgeon.

Yes, I have been seen by my surgeon. My abscess was cut wide open and I am now draining from there and dr said it will stay that way until my next surgery. I was hoping to find someone I could talk with who has been through this. Thank you again for your response.

You still have UC in your rectal-stump, so passing blood and mucus from it is considered normal. You can ask for a prescription for Canada mesalamine suppositories to treat it, if needed.
