Just some perspective from an oldie: in early 1990s I was put on 40 mg Pred daily for a severe UC flare that nearly collapsed the lumen of my colon on left side (waste was actually bouncing, barely able to pass thru!). My gastroenterologist broke my Pred dosage into 10 mg tablets, 1 tab 4 times daily. I personally think it's risky to bombard the human body with 40 mg oral Pred taken all in a single dose. My colon responded quickly to the divided dose and I was able to start tapering by 10 mg after 8 days. However, while I continued to taper & flare abated steadily, I still developed "moonface" in my 2nd month on Pred. This is no drug to fool around with because it can affect any other organ or body function negatively. Therefore, I would not trust a doc who advises taking 40 mg dose in a single or even double dose continuously. Pred is not an antibiotic, it affects everything, every organ, muscles, etc.! / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
