Anyone recovered from COVID?

I’m staying healthy and very careful, but wondering if anyone with UC here has recovered from COVID? How did your UC stay during the bout? What naturals or medications did you use? And what was your general health at the onset?

The cases are really ramping up in my area, and wondering what I should do and if UC makes me high risk.

This is a great question. Would love to hear as well if there are any anecdotes. If you search previous threads, I saw that folks posted on how UC and covid are playing out overall and what the data looks like. My gastroenterologist said that as long as your UC is well managed, risk would be the same as general population since I'm not on any immunosuppressant.

Additionally, research is showing that IBDers are not overall at risk of severe covid more than the general population (exception was those on corticosteroids 3 months before infection): https://www.practiceupdate.com/content/risk-of-severe-covid-19-in-patients-with-ibd-in-the-us/102048

Regardless, i've been trying to boost my immune system and health overall this year by exercising daily, 2 days of light weight training, continuing on my anti-inflammatory diet (check out the AID-IBD diet), probiotics, fish oil and probiotic rich foods (saurkraut and my homemade yogurt). I don't think supplements are as powerful as the effect of a healthy diet with lots of green veggies (steam due to UC), fruit and healthy grains/legumes etc. The data on covid is showing that folks with severe covid often have inflammatory conditions, like obesity and diabetes, so it can only help to reduce overall inflammation.

My sister has crohn's and just recovered from covid a few weeks ago. She uses humira. She still has fatigue after exertion but otherwise is doing well. She said the anxiety about what might happen was worse than the symptoms. Her main symptoms were fever and breathlessness.

You can try looking up posts on COVID experience by 3TimesChamp here on the forum. He got it in the spring & recovered after hospitalization, mainly needed for IV treatment. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Old Hat yes I had it and was hospitalized March 25 to March 30 but I don’t have colon anymore. Had my surgeries in “18. While in hospital for Corona I did have issue holding my stool in somewhat which reminded me of my UC days. I wore a diaper for few days. Was too weak to get up often to have a BM. Hydroxychloroquine I was told hurts intestines while helping cure us of Corona. First 36 hours were touch and go. Never got Intubated but was close to getting it. Been good since. Just got retested for Corona and tested for anti bodies. No Corona thank god and have high anti bodies. I’m doing ok

Old Hat no they didn’t. My GF is a nurse practioner. Let me ask her what she thinks of donating??? It’s fine by me. Here in New York % of positives tested for Corona is going up so I’m cautious with any medical procedure. I don’t have a spleen,I’m 61 —-even though I’m in good shape u never know Hope your all well

That makes sense considering your spleen loss + other health factors, Champ. In my 'hood in Manhattan the public info. street kiosks were flashing during the summer asking recovered COVID-19ers with antibodies to donate plasma, but lately that message hasn't been displayed. The doctors used donated plasma to quell Ebola, which probably led them to try similar procedures against coronavirus earlier in the year. All best wishes to you & GF! / Old Hat

FYI, the study on IBDers and COVID did not show increased death rate compared to general population, however, the hospitalization rate was 30% and mesalamine use (not biologics) was associated with increased fatality in this group of over 500 people with IBD and COVID. The authors didn't know why mesalamine increased fatality rate since it doesn't make much sense and is not an immunosuppressant. Age and other co-morbidities also increased fatality rates, but those are obvious, consistent factors with covid.

The hospitalization rate was definitely high for ibders in this study and is not consistent with general population.

I think the association between mesalazine use and hospitalization is that immunomodulators tend to be used by younger ibd patients

I agree with Poopydoop's interpretation. 5-ASA meds are the safest for IBDers unless allergies to salicylates or "filler" components come into play. In the U.S. & Europe it has seemed that seniors + lower income folks have higher morbidity overall among the respective populations to COVID-19. That correlates directly with incidence of obesity, heart, respiratory, and diabetic conditions. / Old Hat
