Mesalamine Effects

Hi there! Was recently diagnosed with proctitis after undergoing my second colonoscopy in the span of 1 year (was originally told hemerhoids) - my only symptom was red blood and some mucus in stool and occasional constipation. I was prescribed mesalamine (solofalk) suppositories and although they seem to be working well for the reduction of blood which is great I am experiencing some very....weird bowel movements! I just want to know if anyone here has experienced any of these weird symptoms while on this medication - of course I have left a message for my doctor as well but just need some reassurance as I am now in full blown panic mode.
Sorry for the details:
Stool and gas smell extremely strong - almost like sulfer.
Stool is sometimes coated in a white substance - way more than the usual mucus I would get prior to the medication.
Sometimes there are orange deposits floating at the top of the toilet bowl water.
Sometimes there is black in the stool. This worries me the most since I know black is usually a bad sign. The whole stool is not black but there seems to be what I could only think of as black mucous in parts of the stool.
Other days the stool is perfectly normal and with no traces of the red blood which was again my only symptom prior. I would like to keep taking the meds as it seems to be relieving the proctitis symptom but just dont know if these side effects are normal.

Hello & welcome to the UC forum. It does sound like the Salofalk mesalamine suppositories are helping you-- so try to stay calm for discussion with your doctor. The mesalamine that doesn't absorb will look white on stool when it gets excreted, black & orange could be some other harmless waste components of stool. If you don't feel urgent need to eliminate or see red blood those are positive signs that you're healing, but it can take a while to achieve remission so you still need medication. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
