FMT

So after a year of fighting CDiff infections (on top of my UC flare) I had an FMT today. The delivery method was frozen capsules by mouth. It been 10 hours since the procedure and I am now nauseous and vomiting. Has anyone else had this procedure and what kind of side effects have you had?

I was under the impression FMT was done through the anal route so very surprised to hear this. Hoping you get sorted soon though.

I'm biased in that FMT went very badly for me, but I'll spare you that story. I was offered the top-down approach like yours (oral route), but I opted for the anal route instead because in the online focus groups, people reported reactions like yours when they tried the oral route. The small bowel should have next to no bacteria in it. The colon is the opposite, it's full of bacteria. So I don't understand the logic of the top-down approach. The capsules will open into the small bowel and deposit a lot of bacteria there. If the body reacts badly to that, you get nausea and vomiting.

Did your doctor explain why he went the oral route instead of anal route? Anal FMT is the gold standard for c. diff. Why not just give you a retained enema?

There was this one guy in the focus group who would prepare his own FMT smoothies (puke) and would drink it with a straw that he put right at the back of his throat so he wouldn't taste anything. He claimed that within a week of doing this, he was able to eat full-fat dairy again, and other foods that were off limit to him for 10+ years. I found him fanatical and wasn't sure if I believed him. I could not cure myself that way without hurling. But I thought I'd share a contrasting story to show that top-down works for some people, I guess?

Any update on the FMT capsules you took? Did the clinic say the capsules would open in your small intestine or supposed to in the large intestine? Hopefully the vomiting subsided and it did its job and you are doing better - would love to know any update
