Blood thinners and UC

Is anyone here on blood thinners? I'm likely to get prescribed them soon and worried about how they might affect my UC, or if some would be worse for it than others. My neurologists unfortunately have a history of prescribing me things that send me into flares; any info would be useful.

If you're experiencing a lot of rectal bleeding, I would be concerned and first consult with your IBD specialist and/or a hematologist. I say this as someone who did in fact develop blood clots last month as a result of uncontrolled inflammation and multiple hospital stays. Because I was bleeding so much (I had 5 transfusions in 2 months), the on-call hematologist decided that blood thinners were inappropriate, so I had to have a filter placed. If the risk analysis leans in favor of the blood thinners, that's fine, but given the history you cite regarding your neurologist, I would want to first consult with someone who has more expertise and have a plan in place to monitor the situation if needed.

I agree with Suchatravesty RE your need for reliable monitoring in case of blood thinner use. A while back I was injected with that stuff repeatedly in hospital pre- and post-surgery for a non-gastrointestinal site. I was ambulatory 22 hours post-surgery, therefore, less likely to develop clots. The blood thinner injections gave me gagging fits within 10 minutes so I hated them! Then when I started into the preparation for discharge from hospital, the staff insisted that I had to inject myself daily at home with blood thinner Lovenox for the following 3 weeks. I agreed in order to get discharged, but once I got home I phoned my IBD gastro to ask whether I really needed the blood thinner. Gastro replied that I "needed to keep moving"-- which I was already doing! Definitely discuss any additional Rx meds with your IBD physician! / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
