Asacol v Imuran

Is it actually worth taking Asacol if you are on Imuran? Imuran is the major drug of the two so do you really need the Asacol along with it?

They both do different things. I would.... mesalamine is believed to lower the risk of colon cancer.

I've been on both for almost 20 years. They do very different things and compliment each other. I wouldn't drop either for myself.

They can have a cumulative affect.

However, if you've been within a sustained remission for a few years then ask your gasteroenterologist if the mesalamine is still necessary. As a general truth, it takes a lot more meds to initially attain then it does to sustain a remission. You might be fine to use only the imuran.

My GI says that typically after 5 years of documented endoscopic remission he suggests dropping one of the two meds very slowly. Dropping 5-ASA is easier than Imuran because of how quickly it works so that’s what he usually suggests but some patients opt to drop Imuran since it requires routine blood work.
