I've been taking Imuran and Mesalmine granules for my pan colitis for a few years.
Recently I've been having some noticeable soreness in the area of my transverse colon (that feeling like you've been doing too many sit-ups). I never have visible blood, this is simply soreness. When I'm asleep at night, I feel fine, but once I'm up and about
, the stomach muscles are working and I get soreness.
My gastro is out for two weeks, but I contacted his office and another gastro prescribed me Omeprazole (Prilosec). This isa proton pump inhibitor, normally used for gastritis, heartburn, etc.
Has anyone ever heard of this for UC? I'm assuming, as he's a gastro, he knows what he's doing, but I can't find a lot online referring to Omeprazole being used to treat UC.
I did find this one reference:
Abstract
Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, was added to the treatment regimen of seven patients with biopsy proven inflammatory bowel disease. Six of the seven patients showed a marked clinical improvement in symptoms, especially pain and diarrhea after starting omeprazole. One of the six is using omeprazole as her sole medication for her colitis currently. Others have been able to decrease steroid doses. A possible mechanism of action relates the similar chemical structure of omeprazole to metronidazole which is efficacious in colitis.
So, I'm wondering, any experience here on the forum?
Thanks.
