Translated from the dutch news:
Patients with chronic intestinal infections are not at greater risk of a more serious course of infection with the coronavirus. That is the opinion of gastrointestinal and liver specialist Dr Lennard Gilissen of the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. “For patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, this is a very important, reassuring message,” he says.
The study examined 1453 Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis patients. They looked at how often they had a serious course of covid-19 in the first year of the corona outbreak in the Netherlands. This involved vulnerable patients, 40 percent of whom used drugs that suppress the immune system.
"Little is known about
the course of a corona infection in this category of patients," says Gilissen. "Fortunately, the risk of a more serious course resulting in hospitalization or death is not too bad."
The conclusions of the study were recently published in the international medical journal Clinical and Experimental Medicine. According to the hospital, it is the only article in the world to date with long-term results on this patient group with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
