Reaction to Remicade

I had an allergic reaction to Remicade a week after my first infusion. The IBD nurse said I must have built antibodies and that Remi was now off limits. But also said that Humira and the other anti-TNFs may be off limits too.

Is this true? I thought a reaction to one anti-TNF did not necessarily mean the others were ruled out also?

What happened and how do they know it was a reaction from Remicade and not from something else? I always thought that you would get a reaction within a few hours if you were going to get one, not a week later. But I don't have anything to back that up ... just what I always thought. Scary. Have you talked with your doctor?

Yes. It was a delayed 1 week reaction and followed all the details giving on Remicade website about such; rash, fever, headaches, muscle pain. Cleared up within a day. My GI confirmed it was a reaction to the drug.

Seems someone else here just lately posted about having remicade reaction? And they kept on with it but we’re pre-treating with antihistamines? Sorry I just have a vague memory.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I developed antibodies to Remicade and then they put me on Humira but I never had any allergic reactions. What was the reaction you had? So what is the plan now?

Can you take pre-meds that might help this? Since it cleared up on it's own not sure that antibodies would clear up in 1 day like that. Definitely unusual.

Simon, I had a reaction to Remicade on the 3rd infusion. The nurse stopped the infusion, called my dr & he ordered IV Benadryl & Soluble Medrol, they resumed the infusion at a lower rate. From then on this was my protocol & I never had an issue. A lot of people get pre-meds before their infusions. I am not a dr, however, I do not think you could develop antibodies that fast. Are you saying your reaction was gone the following day?

My reaction was 10 days later....i spoke to my GI today....the IBD nurse gave him the wrong info and he thought i got the reaction at the infusion day....hes going to keep me on it for now......thinks its more likely Urticaria...which may or may not be related to remicade and / or my immune system currently in a heightened state
