Awkward question for the women - prostaglandins

Hi there,
I have a question that could be awkward or just silly, so I was hoping to start here instead of asking my GI about it.....

(I've been trying to figure out how to say this, I'm just gonna go for it).
Can unprotected oral or vaginal sex trigger UC symptoms? - I think I'm noticing an association

The internet says stuff about prostaglandins in semen that can cause diarrhea and that prostaglandins could be responsible for "period poop" (which sounds a lot like UC poop). So I've been doing a deep dive into prostaglandins haha and it seems that Lialda (mesalamine) might work by reducing prostaglandin production, so I guess that's a thing. But I don't know if there's really enough prostaglandins in semen to have an impact or if Enytvio just isn't working for me anymore or both.

I'm already talking to my doctor about Entyvio, we're gonna increase to every 4 weeks and then move on to Stelara or Xeljanz if that doesn't work. I haven't decided if I want to ask her about sex. Idk maybe I'm just being silly.

Obviously, for now, my bf and I will make sure he uses a condom and see how that goes.

Don't feel silly about asking your question; it's good that you're trying to be pro-active with your health care, very important! If you don't feel comfortable discussing sexual topics with your gastro, that's also understandable-- because some of them aren't interested in issues pertaining to those organs. Hopefully, you have a reliable gyn who could likely advise you on this issue without making you feel uncomfortable. If not, it's definitely worthwhile to connect with one. In the meantime, you're absolutely wise to use condoms. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Don’t know anything about prostaglandin triggered symptoms but logically some find their flares can get triggered by other infections. In unprotected sex there is always the possibility a partner can pass some infection I think and Even if it doesn’t trigger a flare directly and one contracts say a sexually transmitted infection and is put on antibiotics to clear it, the antibiotics could trigger a flare for some. Best to go with protection and ask the question really.
