Pre-diabetic in correlation with colitis?

So something weirds been happening with my blood work over the past year. I’ve been noticing my glucose getting higher and higher with my labs over the last couple of years. Decided to check my glucose and A1C with my PCP and glucose was 107 and A1C was 6.1. I’m not over weight and I would say I’m in pretty good shape physically.

Would Colitis Or Entyvio cause me to be pre-diabetic? My pcp was suggesting metformin, pre diabetic medication. Kinda freaking out.

I haven't heard of any connection. Glucose can be high when on steroids. I wonder if you could try some dietary changes before going the medication route. I've read studies about whole foods plant-based diets helping to prevent diabetes so you might look into that.

Ryan, have you had COVID? I was just hearing that those who've had COVID infections have more chance of developing diabetes.

No covid and definitely going to try dietary options before medication. Just weird I workout and eat a pretty basic diet. 180lbs. I’m outside everyday with my job constantly working walking. Doesn’t make sense.

I link it more to the autoimmune condition. Diabetes is also an autoimmune disease as is colitis. They don’t know what causes a person to become diabetic but there is a strong genetic component. For type 1, anyway. My father was type 1, as was his uncle. So far my generation and younger, no one has developed it (yet). I always thought I’d dodged a bullet — and then along came UC.

You should be able to keep it under control with diet modifications. Your glucose isn’t all that high yet. I don’t know the range for A1C. My glucose sometimes runs a little high like that but then it goes down again. Let us know your plan and if it’s successful! I think it’s good you’re being proactive about it. I tend to ignore things which is NOT a good plan. 🙈😳

I was pre-diabetic for nearly 10 years. I didn't take it serious at first, however, when I finally did I adjusted my diet. I watched my carbs & laid off of all sugar & my numbers has stayed within normal range. Personally, I would not go the Metformin route. Your A1C is still below the 6.4 cut off. Consider this as a check engine light coming on & clean up your diet.

My doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol medicine because I had one really high reading. I'm vegan and eating a pretty healthy diet most the time but I think I had eaten a lot of junk food the week before that test. It's been normal ever since (my GI tests it every 4 months since I'm on Xeljanz). I was really freaked out and confused too but I later learned cholesterol tests can vary a lot depending on what you ate recently. I know that's different than glucose but just thought I'd share because it freaked me out also.

Do you have a history of steroid use? When I was on steroids for a long time my glucose and A1C skyrocketed -- A1C was 7.1 which is low level diabetes. Doc wanted to give me a med. I asked to see if it would come down once I was off steroids. It has, but never fully back to normal. It usually hovers between 6.1-6.4 now. Doc seems fine with it staying under 7 since I am now classified as having diabetes. 7 seems to be what the diabetes meds on TV tout as success. I was freaked out when it was 7.1!

Thanks for the responses, I’m going for a console tomorrow and will definitely be changing some of my diet hopefully in order to get a second test done but looking back at some of my blood work over the last year my glucose has been gradually climbing every test 5-6 points.
