I have had standing GERD for almost 25 years now. Two days ago, I started to lose my voice and have pain when swallowing. Saw the ENT doctor yesterday. Upon examination, he informed me that I have severe GERD inflammation in my throat and a sore throat probably caused by a cold. He prescribed an antibiotic twice per day. Texted my GI and he agreed that I take the antibiotic along with Rinvoq. Does Rinvoq aggravate GERD or do I have a problem with my GERD and I need to see my GI? I’m on Nexium 40 mg x 2 and my dose has been like that for years. I take also Baclofen tablets. For years, I tried my best to keep my GERD between grades A and B LA classification. I’m just worried that it’s not only my Crohn’s that is going down the hill but my GERD and gastritis as well.

Probably an ignorant question but what's the logic behind prescribing antibiotics? Do you have a bacterial infection? Antibiotics can change things in your gut....

I alway had occasional heartburn before UC but only occasionally and depending on what I had eaten. After entyvio (do not recall how long after I started it) I developed what I call atomic heartburn. Had never experienced it so severe that it felt like it was burning a hole in my esophagus. I went on omeprazole and it’s fine now. But I have always had a suspicion that it’s somehow related to whatever entyvio does to my system or the mechanism in how it works somehow causes more acid reflux. I mean I’d definitely rather have to take the omeprazole than have severe UC again. But yeah.

I have not seen anyone on Rinvog complain about this.

I don't understand why you were put on an antibiotic, that makes no sense. I've had it & always was put on PPIs, never an antibiotic. You've been on them quite a bit this past year.

Talk to your gi, he may need to either switch you a different PPI or add something to it temporarily.

Invest in a couple of bed risers to elevate the top of your bed, this helps somewhat & they are cheap enough.

Saw my GI and discussed with him the problem of the worsened GERD. He suggested it could either be caused by a medicine as I take a lot including Entocort or stress as I'm so worried of failing my third treatment in less than a year. He prescribed Maalox to be taken after meals.

minnie: hell that is stressful failing this many meds in one year. Iam failing my second med also in less than a year. Iam sorry you are going through this.

I did experience heartburn and reflux on Rinvoq high dose 45 mg. It was pretty bad. It didn't feel so much like reflux but i felt out of breath. Yet I also had this burning sensation at the back of throat like reflux does to me.
I actually still do not know what it was. And my GI wasn't sure either. It was this strange feeling like I was suffocating. I bought an oximeter at home and used it to check if my oxygen was actually dropping when I had these "attacks". It didn't. So anyway, I self-medicated by taking gaviscon, and also by using Ventolin. That combination helped.
