Canker Sores - Can Colazal cause them?

Anyone get terrible canker sores with their UC? I've never been proned to getting them, but for the last six months, I've been getting them all the time. And not just one here or there, but a mouthful all over. Just as one starts to heal another on the other side of my mouth will pop up. I've tried all sorts of different washes and rinses and remedies, but they keep coming back and they last for a long time. I will go a few weeks without them, but as soon I start feeling one coming on there is no stopping it.

I've had UC for 14 years and this have never been a problem until recently. The only thing I can think is different is I started taking Colazal at the beginning of the year. I've like the results Colazal give my UC, but am not sure about the side effects. For awhile, we thought the Colazal was causing joint pain for me and tried stopping it. Well, my UC flared and the joint pain didn't go away. As a result, I had to go back on prednisone and Colazal to get it under control. I just finished my prednisone taper last week and am just taking Colazal and have had these canker sores for almost two weeks.

If anyone has experience with canker sores and their UC, I would love to hear what you do.

Canker sores are common with having IBD...I have crohns (crohns-colitis to be specific, CD acting up in my colon) for 16 yrs now and it was only about 5 yrs ago I started having alot of troubles with mouth sores...taking probiotics daily has cleared up the problem and kept them at bay, been taking probiotics for 4 ys now and havn't had a single mouth sore since.

So just because you've had UC for 14 yrs and are only now dealing with mouth sores doesn't mean much, same thing happend to me, IBD acts up in funny ways all on it's own...not to say that it couldn't be caused by meds, just pointing out it can often have a mind of it's own.

pb4 - Thanks, That's what I've been thinking too. Mouth sores seem like they would have to be related to UC since it's part of the digestive track and a canker sore has to be similar to the ulcerations in the colon with UC. I just googled this and a bunch of healing well threads popped up on canker sores. Think I will call my GI tomorrow about it. Time to check in with him anyway.

I know there are so many threads about probiotics, but what kind do you take? They come in both capsule and liquid form I suppose. Is one type better than the other?

Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way, comes in caps or powder form...it's a very good quality one, I recommend you start with it and work from there if you have to...it's got a great amount of CFU's, 5 billion, and has many benefits, helps with lactose intolerance, high cholesterol, vaginal health, has guaranteed intestinal release as well.

I don't get canker sores (now watch I'll get them!) but yes they are associated with Uc and Cd. Every year I get something new that pops up that I didn't have before. One year it was eye infections, another kidney infections, another warts and yet another cysts....Uc is such a lovely disease isn't it?? Just remember to stay away from acidic things because it will make it worse. Do you drink any soda?

I get them all the time. I have since I was young. Usually they go away fairly quickly on their own. If not I gargle w/ warm salt water. They are a total pain!

tif you still get them even though you're taking probiotics? That's strange, often canker sores are related to bacteria according to what my doc told me, they can also be from eating too much processed sugar, granola, popcorn, toast or anything eles that's rough on the gums.

Red_34 - I do drink soda occasionally, but lately have been trying to drink a lot of water because I know that helps and feels the best on my mouth. You are so right about suddenly getting something with UC. My lacramal glands in my eyes used to get really big and dry before and during a flare, now they are perfectly fine. This joint pain and canker sores just started this year. I hate blaming everything on UC, but without it I would be pretty healthy.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I will start a probiotic and see if that makes a difference. They are a little better today,but by the end of the day they really hurt.
