endoscopy for stomach pains

Dear All,

I had written about having bad stomach pains and very large (1-2) BM's/day a few weeks ago. That hasn't subsided and I'm finally going to be in for an endoscopy. I think the GI suspects there's something very wrong with my upper GI. Anything I should be aware of? I know I'll be sedated, but are there any after-effects of the endoscope?

I have had several endoscopies. They all went fine. Though once they stretched my uvulea(hangy ball) and it sat on the back of my throat for a few days. Very strange, I did go back to make sure it was OK, but other than that very strange happening no problems. Just like a colonoscopy but without the prep.

I have had a couple, the only thing I noticed was I was very thirsty after. no problems at all.

I had one of those done once...
My throat was a little scratchy afterwards, and I was thirsty... but other than that, smooth sailing!

I've had three, no problems. I have chronic mod.-severe stomach pain, mainly after I eat, sometimes even after drinking water. All tests I've taken has lead to nothing specific, just have been told it's part of IBS--was given Bentyl (anti-spasmotic), which side-effects (lethargy, nausea) don't make me want to take them, plus not sure it works for me, for the pain. I'd be really curious to talk w/you re: stomach pain and your e-scope results.

Big Lucy, I will write and tell you what they see. I get pains both before and after eating. i can only sleep in some positions - not on my back or stomach, and preferably on my left side. The pain is around the navel, but I get relief if i pass gas. Quite disgusting.

Good luck with the procedure & please keep us posted on your situation. Hopefully you'll get some relief from the navel area pain. Even babies get gas pains, though, so you need not feel disgusting because of that! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 5 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission again soon)

Dear all, I had my endoscopy and the GI said i had an inflammation in my stomach. No ulcers or worse. He prescribed Zegrid (usually given for heartburn). It's been 2 days of since and my symptoms haven't eased. I don't remember telling him I had heartburn. The gas pains continue and the size of my BM's is still huge. Also, I'm losing weight - down another 1.5 lbs in the past 3 days. I feel much weaker too. And the pain, when it comes is crippling. I'm all nerves now.

What did the doctor say regarding your navel area pain? Does he intend to do the small bowel barium series (x-rays)? It's possible that you have some inflammation there that has not yet been detected-- because endoscopy only reaches the duodenum. Did doctor give you any dietary advice? Those are probably 2 areas that you need more attention to. There's also the possibility that some of your symptoms (e.g., gas pains) come from Asacol use. Have you ever used any other oral 5-ASA? Maybe Colazal or Lialda would work better for you. Other writers to this site report doing better on one or another of these meds-- so you might benefit from a change there, too. Final thought: did gastro ever press down firmly on your abdomen by quadrants? That's the most basic way to assess origin of pain coming from internal organs-- but some doctors never do this any more, just rely on tests & equipment. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 5 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission again soon)

The GI only did the endoscopy and didn't recommend anything at all. Before the procedure he asked if I had pains above the navel and I told him that I had pains both above and below. And he didn't examine my abdomen at all. If this doesn't clear up, I'll have to go thro another procedure and just prolong the pains.

I just got a letter in the mail telling me that the biopsy showed that I have h. pylori infection and will have to go on antibiotics. That may explain why I don't feel better still.

I sure hope your pain goes away soon. That's good you at least know what was probably causing it now (h. pylori). Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Hi..it's good they found you have something that can be treated (not that it's good you have h. pylori..;-) hope you get relief soon.

When do you go back to check that it's gone?

As Quincy wrote, there is both a positive & negative side to what your procedure turned up, but overall, the diagnosis being something more easily treatable than others, your health should improve when med(s) get rid of the h. pylori. No wonder you've been in pain! Dear All, thanks very much for the support and advice. I have a 14 day prescription of 'prevac' an antibiotic mix. I suppose they expect me to be fine by then.
