What do you do if you need to take an antibiotic? Are there certain types that are easier for people with UC to handle?
Thanks.

We all handle antibiotics differently but some of us take probiotics which can help counter the affects of the antiobiotic. Usually any of the "Cyclines" are a bad idea - these get rid of bacteria both good and bad in the colon. And typically all the "'cillians" are not ideal either but a better choice then the "cyclines". I find that Zithromax had no affect on my Uc at all when I had to take it last for bronchitis. What do you have to take an antibiotic for? Also too if you aren't on a probiotic, eating yogurt helps too - it's just not as effective as a probiotic.

I took Flagyl (sp?) which was supposed to be great for people with colitis (and a bacteria problem) but I didn't notice any difference. This may just have been my case (my GI swears by Flagyl). Also, I had to fight with the insurance company to get them to pay for it, but they did. In any case, it is what my GI recommends, but I can't say my personal experience has been that great (of course, i have a cray colon, so who knows???) Hope that helps a little, let us know what you end up doing.

I have ended up on antibiotics way too much this year. 3 sinus infections plus a leg incision that got infected twice. I think the key is to take your probiotics while on antibiotics. I have been on all different ones and I don't recall one affecting my UC more than the other.
