Hey there. I know hair loss/thinning has been discussed before on this site but I wanted to share my specific story and get some feedback. My UC is basically in remission. I haven't had a flare up in some time. After a routine colonoscopy my GI doctor upped my dosage from 800 to 1600 mg per day, still very low, I know. A few weeks into the 1600 mg dosage I noticed my hair seemed much more thin and brittle and had no life or shine to it. After about 3 months at 1600 I was dropped back to 800. But, sadly, my hair hasn't seemed to recover. It's still dry and thin and looks pretty terrible. I wouldn't say it's falling out just thinning, where the hair is very fine and you can see my scalp more easily.

Does anyone have a similar story? And if so, how long does it take the hair to repair itself? Is it possible that any permanent damage was done?

my hair was not as pretty when i had UC (colon is gone now, so UC is too, WHOO HOO!) anyway, i took asacol and it didnt' seem to make a differnce, the pred and the actual flares did for me, but whenever you have a disease it affects your fingernails and hair first, at least outwardly, also your skin will change. This is a random fact, but one of the ways they tell about the lives of people found frozen (like that mountain guy from thousands of years ago) is by looking at his fingernails they can tell that he had several times of bad health.
The good thing is that hair grows out, and the damage is to the hair that is there, not to the hair that is coming, does that make sense? and if you get better, or the dose gets lower, the hair that comes next, should be better. Hair grows in three month cycles
