OT - Help! Got a question about my daughters pain

I got a call from my daughter (she's 12) today to pick her up from school because she was having severe abdominal pains.  She is telling me the pain is below her stomach but above her pubic bone and the pain ranges from a 7 to 9.  She has no other symptom such as D, vomiting, or fever.  Her last bm was yesterday.  Any suggestions as to what it may be?  I gave her some Tylonel to help with the pain which it has lessened a little but if it continues I may have to take her to the ER.  I hate when the pain happens to one of my kids because I don't know if it's something serious to something fairly benign such as a stomach bug.  Oh and she does not have UC.

Could she be trying to start her period?

No, she' not near her time. She started them when she was 10 but she's not due to start for another 2 weeks. I gave her Tylonel and she's starting to feel better but if her pain comes back I think I might take her in to be on the safe side.

Depending on what side it's on, I would be worried about appendicitis.  Not everyone gets the flu-like symptoms along with the pain.  I might be a hypochondriac, but I would err on the side of caution and take her to the ER.

Could be ovulation (2 weeks from her period)....but I agree to get it checked out asap because it could be any of the above.

Could even be a bladder infection. Does it hurt when she urinates?

Don't wait.
Let us know the outcome.

Sherry I would get it checked out if it persists more then a couple of hours. Depending on the pain I may not wait that long. Good luck.

Quincy makes a great point about the bladder infection. I had one several weeks ago and experienced the most intense abdominal pain of my entire life. It was unbelievable and way worse than any UC pain I have ever had.

LOL I just asked her if it burns when she pees and she gave me such the oddest look! But she said no. She's been lounging on the couch all day which is not like her because she is normally all go go go. Her pain isn't there and we are about to have dinner so I will see how she behaves after she eats. I was thinking appendicitis too but other then the pain, she didn't have any other typical signs. It was smack dab in the middle of her gut. It just scares me sooooo bad when my kids complain of gut pain!

good to hear it's not continuing. You'll know soon enough if it's worth investigating. Could also be gasssssssssss, which we all know can bring us to our knees at times.

Sherry, I get terrible pains some months when I'm ovulating. I mean to the point I can hardly walk and it feels like my abdomen is distended. Tylenol usually takes care of the pain after a couple of hours, but it still is sore. It's always happened like every other month, so I'm assuming it's one ovary that just doesn't like to ovulate. But, as we all know, better to tell the doc! :-) Hope she is feeling better.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure what it could be and I hate rushing my kids to the docs for the slightest thing. But of course if it warrants a visit then I would definately take them. My son broke me in when he was younger because as a tot, he was always sick with extremely high fevers and then when he got older we were always going to the ER for his daredevil stunts! (amazing I'm not gray yet). And so far my daughter has only gone once to the ER and that was for breathing problems due to bronchitis but my son has made me jittery when it comes to their wellbeing! He's older then her by 4 years.

Today she woke up and was bouncy again. She gets these type of "belly pains" frequently - normally it's just gas but she NEVER calls from school to be brought home. So it must've been bad. If it happens again then I may have to take her in to get to the bottom of these mysterious gut pains.

Glad to hear she's feeling better, but I'd sure keep an eye on the situation, knowing that heredity puts your kids at risk for also developing digestive issues.

I remember having frequent "stomach aches" and constipation as a child. I often wonder if something hadn't been done to investigate the cause years ago, I might not be where I am today.

I agree....I also suggest you documnt them on a separate calendar for your daughter...one of those small ones. See if there's a pattern.
