Colazal and Stomach Pain.

Newbie to the site.  I was diagnosed with UC in 1998.  I take Colazal and Rowasa right now.

I am not sure if its just me or what, but whenever I take the Colazal my stomach hurts for about an hour afterwards and I feel like throwing up.  Does anyone, that takes Colazal, get these same symptoms?  Am I supposed to take with food?  I wasn't instructed to and, honestly, I have no desire to eat much food right now as I am in the middle of a full-blown flare up.

Any insight as to how one feels after taking Colazal would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Healingwell :) YES - definately take it with food. I had the same problem as you, I was taking my Colazal on an empty stomach and I think that from years of doing this with initially Asacol and now Colazal, I know have acid reflux. These meds can be super hard on your stomach. Try to eat something when you take this and if the pain doesn't subside nor the nausea, call your doc.

Were you on Asacol or pentasa before going on the Colazal?

Where in the colon is your UC...limited or throughout?

I would second the suggestion to take it with food.

You are supposed to take Colazal with food! My pharmacist always attaches a sticker to the medicine bottle stating this. Just eat some toast while you're swallowing the med-- if you don't have much appetite at 1st. Be sure to drink plenty of water with each dosage plus throughout the day. That is crucial to improvement of your UC inflammation. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily; seem to be back in remission after July flare)

I take my Colazal 3 times a day and always either right before a meal or afterwards. For the middle of the day dosage I have a snack before I take it. I have zero appetite when I flare. Just try to eat something bland or that doesn't hurt your tummy too bad. Hang in there!

hi quincy...

i have taken asacol and pentasa without much success.  my UC is throughout my entire colon.  i seem to be feeling better but have no energy.  hoping i get my energy back soon!
