Hi all,

Here I am again---so confused.  I know that no one here is a Dr., but Ido know that some of you have a ton of information and are smart enough to be heart specialists.  So here is the whole dilema---April 08 I took Lipid panel  Total Chol 287, Trig.134, HDL 76, LDL 184 and High density 3.8

Dr. wanted me to go on Statin drug --simvastatin and I get so scared thinking about those drug and the side effects.  So I went to an acupuncturist and got poked and took awful tasting herb tea for several monthes now.  I promised cardio doc that if the Chinese stuff didn't work I would take his "poison".  I had such high hopes!!!!  Just got back results today ---Total chol. 291, Trig 95, HDL 73, LDL 199 and High density 4.0.  I'm not sure what all of them mean---but the total went UP!!!!  So now I have to keep my promise to the cardio doc and start taking the "scary stuff"  Then talked to someone today who says that this new drink called MonaVie is great and will work wonders and not to take the statins.  I tried Red Yeast Rice from the health food store and had a weird reaction to it---although the acup. guy said he put a really pure form of it in the herbal tea.  This may sound like crazy trivial blathering to some of you---but I am at my whits end.  I am always terrified of having a heart attack even tho' all of my tests are good---so I don't want to not take care of this.   Have any of you tried any of the things I'm talking about and has anything worked?  What have you all done to lower cholesterol??????????  Help!  I have no one to ask that doesn't have their own agenda!!! confused sad confused

:-)  Hope you are still around, but I will keep this breif incase you are gone.  I was so afraid to take the statins, and did not do well on several of them, finally settled on just 20 mgs of zocor, same as simvistatin, fo for it, I had so much anxiety over my high cholesteral that i finally gave in.  I would like to say though that you have great hdl levels and tri #'s  but so do i  Just jump in, quit reading all the bad stuff.  zocor has been around a long time, so start with that one.  I tryed lipitor, vytorin,crestor,pravacal, and finally found this one with the least problems.

thank you DREAMGIRL---this whole heart thing is just toooo scary.  I have been taking the Simvastatin now for 3 days (5mg) and nothing bad has happened. So I will probably continue on with it and get up to a larger dose soon.  I am going to do an angiogram as soon as I can though----I am so SICK of all of the fear around my chest pain that I can barely stand it.  I want to know once and for all---if I die on the table it would be a relief!!!!!!!  I am in the middle of some now and going out of my mind---so you are getting a crazy reaction---sorry, but sometimes it just gets to be too much.  Thanks again for your support

I am on 20 mg of zocor and have been since last September with no problems.Before that I was on Lipitor but came off that due to my doc not liking some results on the liver function tests.

mad  same thing happened to me on the lipitor, elevated liver count.  5 mg is reallllly a low dose, i am very sensative to meds and that is way to low to do much good,  be brave and step it up to 10, tht will help for sure.  I needed to get up to 20 to get my ldl decent, not great, but decent!!!!!!

I'm pretty sensitive to meds too and was kind of scared of the side effects. I have so many weird aches and pains that I was afraid that I wouldn't know which was which---so I dicided to start out really slow.  I keep hearing that the most important #s are the hdl and the trigl---and those are so good on my lab tests.  It is just a bunch of confusing!!!!  I think I posted some info on the other thread about the acupuncturist----he is a pharmacist too---not a cardio doc, but not a dope either and he keeps reasurring me about my numbers and wanting me to stay off the drugs. I see my cardio doc tomorrow morning and I will keep talking to him.  I'm sure he will want me to up the simvastatin to at least 10mg.  confused   :-) When I read this back I sound like a real nutcase rolleyes
