just letting people know that I had my closure on Monday. Stayed 1 night in the hospital just for observation. Just tired the day of surgery. Home the next day and feel great! Can't believe how easy is was. If anyone lives close to Utah. My doctor has done over 2700  of these procedures and is supposed to be one of the best in the country. Anyone waiting to have the closure should know it was so easy. Some soreness in the groin but thats it

I am glad everything went well. sometimes the worry before the procedure is worse then the procedure itself.

Welcome back Slgreennewyork1!  I am so happy everything went well with your procedure and that you are recovering nicely.  I hope soon you will get back to normal and continue enjoying your active lifestyle or running, biking, etc.

I hope you will continue to post periodically so we can know how you are doing.

I totally agree... I just had my PFO closure done two days ago (12/23/2008) and it sounds like we had the same doctor - Dr. Sherman Sorensen. He is definitely one of the best doctors around to do this type of procedure based on what I've been finding out. You can check out his website to get more info: http://sorensenmd.com

So far, I'm very pleased. They kept me in the hospital for 24 hrs before I went home. The only thing that kind of scared me was when I got up for a walk 2 hrs after the surgery, I ended up bleeding quite a bit from the groin vein in my leg. I had to lay down for few more hours and I was fine. The groin area is still little sore but other than that, I feel GREAT! My PFO was around 25mm and the doctor ended up using Gore Helex device.
I'm on Plavix 75mg for at least 3 months, aspirin 325mg for 6 months and antibiotic (just in case) for couple of days.

The procedure was a piece of cake and I shouldn't have worried as much as I did... I just hope the healing process goes according to plan and I can go back to my normal activities. Anyway, I strongly recommend this if you need it done and like slgreennewyork1 mentioned - if you can, have Dr. Sherman Sorensen do the procedure. He is one of the best in the country!

May I ask what the criteria was for closing the pfo - we live in Australia and my 20 year old son is having a great deal of difficulty getting a surgeon to close his pfo. He was diagnosed almost 3 years ago, is an athlete tiring quickly, unable to sustain normal training, has an unprovoked shunt, and a pfo with 16mm asa. He had a probable tia at a sporting event interstate but was not taken to medical care until 2 days later. We have been trying to get it closed ever since. Is anyone on the forum from Australia?Many thanks.
