esophagitis?! & Dr refusing ekg results

Happy 2009 everyone!   Last night after eating sunchips i felt like 1 was stuck in my throat.  i waited a few hours, drinking water & eating bread but nothing worked so i went to the ER.  The x-ray & catscan showed something, the Dr said there was something there but he couldnt tell exactly what it was - it looked like a scar in my esophogus.  He gave me a partial diagnosis of esophagitis & said if it was something else theyd call me today, i didn't get a call.  several months ago i did swallow a tiny bit of glass during a seizure, but that damage has healed already so i dont understand this.  ive been tested for GERD & dont have it.  Any advice greatly appreciated, thank-you.  p.s. my primary Dr is refusing to give me copies of ekg strips when my heart stopped january 08, 08.  & the EP Dr is refusing to work out a treatment plan for me without these.  HELP!!!

Hi overactor,

Do you live in the US?  If so, it is your right as a patient to get copies of any and ALL medical tests that are administered to you.  Your doctor is breaking the law by refusing to give you copies of your tests.  Perhaps you should "remind" him/her of this in a polite way, and hopefully this will make the Dr. give you the copies of the tests.  It seems ridiculous to me that a dr. would refuse to give you copies of your tests, unless he/she is hiding something...

I went to many doctors in my difficult quest to have my heart condition diagnosed and treated (PFO with serious complications).  Every doctor I went to who performed any type of test gave me a copy when I requested one.  No questions asked - they know it's the law and my right as a patient to have copies of all my medical records.

I hope you get copies of your tests.  Please keep us posted.

Did the primary doctor run the EKG on 01/08/08? Were you in his office at the time or in a hospital? If the EKG was done someplace other than the primary's office, then you are going to have to get the record from the facility where the EKG was performed. Doctors will usually only release copies of records they have made concerning your care. As an example, if my rheumatologist orders blood work and I want a copy, I cannot get the copy from the priimary during a visit to him. I must get the copy from the rheumy.

Has your EP doctor's office staff had you sign a release that they can then fax to the primary doc's office requesting the needed EKG copies?

Ides is correct in that you need to get a copy of the EKG from the place where it was performed.  If it was a hospital, they should have no problem providing you with a copy of it to you, since they know HIPPA laws better than any of us.

However, from your post, it seems to me as if the primary dr.'s office was the one that performed the EKG.  I know my general doctor also performs EKG's in her office, even though she never performed one on me.  I told her I had a cardiologist and whenever I needed an EKG I would go to my cardio's office instead.  FYI, even though my heart was failing (looong story!), I had about 6 EKG's performed at different times for a period of about a year and they all came back normal.  Needless to say, I have very little faith on these tests unless you are actually having a heart attack or other major heart arrythmia.  EKG's are not able to detect many other heart conditions.
