just got back from the cardiologist... please help

I posted a couple weeks ago concerning palpitations and irregluar heart rate.  Well I just left the cardiologist and he ordered for me to have an echo next week and a 24 hour holter moniter placed.  While I was in the doctors office, they did and EKG which showed sinus tachycardia. ( i was very nervous while they were doing this!!) My heart rate was 118.  Right now Im 70-80's.  I told him that I've been very stressed out lately and nervous about a huge nursing test I have next month.  I took my xanax when I got back home and feel better sort of.  Im just wondering why he would want to follow up with an echo and holter monitor, because he did say my EKG "looked good" beside the elevated heart rate.  He was wondering why my heart races at times he had mentioned.  He also ordered a TSH level to be done.  Im so scared that the echo or the holter moniter is going to show something negative.  Any thoughts or advice??  The office didn't schedule the echo to be done till next week so I guess that means its nothing urgent..                Thanks in advance for everyones help.                             Josh

Please take a deep breath and know that you are going to be OK. The Holter monitor is a type of electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) used to monitor the ECG tracing continuously for a period of 24 hours or longer. An ECG is one of the simplest and fastest procedures used to evaluate the heart.

The Holter monitor records continuously for the entire period of 24 hours. Some Holter monitors may record continuously but also have an event monitor feature that you activate when symptoms begin to occur. IMHO your Doctor has ordered the monitor to see how your heartrate looks under your normal circumstances of everyday life.

An echocardiogram (often called "echo") is a graphic outline of the heart's movement. During this test, high-frequency sound waves, called

Your doctor may perform an echocardiogram to assess the overall function of your heart.

TSH levels are tested in the blood of patients suspected of suffering from excess ([color=black>hyperthyroidism[color=black>hypothyroidism</A><FONT]) of thyroid hormone. I have had my levels checked several times.

If the TSH level is below normal, your doctor may determine that you are hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid.) Hyperthyroidism symptoms may include rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) — commonly more than 100 beats a minute.

All of these tests are strictly diagnostic. You have posted that you have been very stressed out lately which will most likely be the cause of your increased heartrate and anxiety is a primary cause of many people's faster heartrates.
