Hey everyone,

Just a quick question from the inquisitive me.

For those of you who have a heart condition, how did you find out about it?

 

1. No prior symptoms - discovered during a routine/unrelated check up

2. No prior symptoms - sudden 'attack'

3. Symptoms (typical) - chest pain, arm pain, back pain, jaw pain, shortness of breath, etc

4. Symptoms (atypical) - pls elaborate

5. Others

I know a lot of patients find out when they are having other problems and EKG is done as part of the work up.  Surprise but a good thing if they have had heart disease and not aware of it.

A few times over a period of 1-2 years I would occasionally feel my heart "flutter". Never lasted long, just a matter of minutes.

Then March 2010 I had a short period of strong, erratic heartbeats. Then again in April. Then again in May. Then again in June. Since they were occurring once a month but never for very long, just minutes, my family doctor insisted it was time to try a 30 day event monitor and hope one occurred during the time I was on the monitor. I'd had a stress test, a chemical stress test, an echo, nothing ever showed up as a problem.

Ha! Just before the event monitor was ordered I ended up in ER w/an episode of strong, erratic heartbeats, plus some mild center chest pain, and this one lasted 3-4 hours so they were able to pick it up on an EKG.

I had two episdoes whilst on the 30 day monitor. Neither lasted an hour, but one was rated "critical" and one was rated "serious". The Dx was Atrial fibrillation. I was started on Coumadin to hopefully prevent blood clots from the A fib and a calcium channel blocker until I saw a cardiologist who started me on an anti-arrhythmic and a 21 day event monitor to keep an eye on my response to the meds.

I was in for an annual check up and my ANP noticed a heart murmur. I was referred to a cardiologist and diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect which was repaired last Spring. I was not aware that I was having symptoms before hand, but learned that my migraines and exercise fatigue were related to my defect. I've had only one migraine since the repair and have much better exercise capacity now.

had heart attack jan 3,2011- i woke up that morning feeling short of breath, as day went on noticed i couldnt walk far" meaning 10 steps" with getting dizzy,
later that nite i was sitting watching t.v and felt like someone was bear hugging me. like i couldnt exspand my lungs to breath. so had enough went to hospital.
made it to the door of hospital and had my heart attack...had ct scans, chest exrays..etc....they figured out my gal bladder was dead,blood clots in right leg and both lungs....

I have had a murmur all my life, which they considered nothing. then when I was 45 I started haveing agina pain, just here and there maybe one day a week I would have sharp quick chest pain, then when I was 47 I got u really sick one morning and felt bad all day long when I went to bed that evening I started throwing up what looked like just like clear foam. and had alot of pain between my shoulder blades in back. laid there all night went to the hospital next day was haveing a heart attack. had 3 stents put in that was in 2003. on Jan 11, 2011 had chest , jaw , and shoulder pain went the hospital they said wasnt my heart all the test came back good, i told them it was my heart. they sent me home, so went to my cardio and he did a cardiac cath, said i was right unfortionately, and that it was a good thing i listened to my body, said I could have died at home, they kept me in the hospital for 5 days getting off of blood thinners then did a double bypass, so always listen to your body you know it better then anyone else. because had a listened to the hospital chances are I would be dead today.
