hi all,

i am new this community. One of my close frnd is suffering from mitral valve proplase.it was detected 2 months back.she is very thin and gets tired easily.doc is asking for surgery

i wanted to know that is surgery is only way out? can it be cured completely from yoga , medications or accupuncture?

Welcome to Healing Well! I'm not a regular member of this forum, but am helping out while a friend is away. I happen to have mitral valve prolape myself, but once it was diagnosed, and I knew it was okay, it didn't bother me any more.

I know that certain things trigger my problem--caffeine, wine. and stress are three.

I'm a new member as well. I had Mitral Valve Prolapse myself so I thought I would respond to your post for your friend.

In most cases, MVP is a benign condition that can cause some uncomfortable symptoms, and I was told, rarely gets worse! Like dencha stated, red wine, caffeine, lack of exercise are things that will aggravate it.

Unfortunately, in my case, my Mitral Valve regurgitation got to a severe level. I was very tired and didn't have much energy. I actually didn't know I was ill, I just thought I was now over 50 and post menopausal and that was how I was suppoed to feel! WRONG!

I was lucky. I had a new job and new insurance. I went for a checkup and my PCP listened to my heart and sent me for an echo right away.

From there, it was only a month before I had open heart surgery to repair my valve.

Tell your friend not to worry about MVP too much. Tell them to do their research. The internet is full of information. The most important advise is to get regular echocardiagrams!!!!! I was supposed to have one every year, and I went over 10 years without doing it. BIG MISTAKE!

With information and regular echos, your friend should be just fine!

I hope this helped a little! Oh, by the way! I was back at work 5 weeks post op. I feel great now except for my stupid arthritis pain!

OOPs, forgot to say. If the doctor is asking for surgery, then evidently her MVP is severe.

If that is the case, most likely surgery is the only way out. The valve cannot fix itself. Not even with meditation and yoga. I am a meditation instructor! I wish that could have helped.

If she can get away with repair, not a valve replacement, that is even better. I went into surgery thinking I was going to have a pig valve when I woke up. I was so fortunate that my doc was able to repair my valve. I do not have to take blood thinners, only a beta blocker, and I shouldnt have to take that forever.

i will surely ask her to avoid caffeine.we are looking thrugh the  various info and lets see wats the final decsion...plz alwz post any new updates.

she is just 25 and didnt show any symptoms. she recently got a sore throat and chest pain. doc asked for ECG and it is then it was detected.

doc said dat may be it is from past 12 years. is it possible to have  MVP for 12 years wit no symptoms..???

Hello and Welcome to HealingWell ! Many patients with mitral valve prolapse do not have symptoms. My sister had MVP but she was 78 years old so how long she had it we do not know. 

Remember you have the right to feel anxious but know that in will not be long and you will know what your Dr. has to say.
