Palpitations Caused by Thyroid?

I am a 63 year old female who has been having palpitations for the last few years. I am taking 25 mg of Toprol Succ ER once daily. I have been steadily losing my hair for the last few years but it has increased over the last several months.

I asked my cardiologist to order a thyroid panel but he refused to do so. Is it unreasonable to ask for that test. He said he doesn't have a code to order it which I find rather strange.

I have other symptoms that might indicate my thyroid is off kilter. Has anyone been diagnosed with a thyroid condition that could be the cause of palpitations?

I have had EKGs, an Echo, and a Holter Monitor and no serious problems have been found.

The palpitations are frequent and scary. I know they can be benign but what can be done to eliminate them if there is no known cause? I'm not one to take prescription meds. I would rather find a natural method to treat them.

I am uninsured so I cannot afford to go from doctor to doctor. I find it unreasonable that my cardiologist won't order the thyroid panel when I have an upcoming appt. with him. He advised going to my GP which would be an additional office call to pay for out of pocket.

Thank you Kitt for the reply. I've decided to cancel the appt. with the cardiologist and go to my D.O. instead. She will no doubt send me to a cardiologist but I'll find a new one. I don't take kindly to being refused such a simple request as a thyroid panel and therefore feel he is not the cardiologist for me.

I was thinking more on the lines of being hypothyroid because of the hair loss. I'll research hyperthyroid to see if the other symptoms I have point to that possibility.
