Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To test whether alternate-day low-dose aspirin affects incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a large-scale randomized trial of women.

DESIGN:

Randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial.

PARTICIPANTS:

Thirty-nine thousand eight hundred seventy-six healthy female health professionals aged 45 years or older.

INTERVENTION:

Participants were assigned randomly to receive either 100 mg aspirin on alternate days or placebo and were followed up for the presence of AMD for an average of 10 years.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:

Incident AMD responsible for a reduction in best-corrected visual acuity to 20/30 or worse based on self-report confirmed by medical record review.

RESULTS:

After 10 years of treatment and follow-up, there were 111 cases of AMD in the aspirin group and 134 cases in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.64-1.06).

CONCLUSIONS:

In a large-scale randomized trial of female health professionals with 10 years of treatment and follow-up, low-dose aspirin had no large beneficial or harmful effect on risk of AMD.

Ok,,,I had a blocked lad 98% never had a heart attack...was on Plavix and full aspirin for 1-1/2 yrs..then taken off Plavix...have been on full strength aspirin since..now Dr says I can take just 2 81mg a day ( aspirin)

I take simvistatin too but my HDL is 120  my LDL is 70 so my blood work is great..I work out everyday, 53 yr old male, 5'8" tall weigh 140 pounds...lean and mean :)

Despite hundreds of clinical trials, the appropriate dose of aspirin to prevent myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke is uncertain. In the US, the doses most frequently recommended are 80, 160, or 325 mg per day. Because aspirin can cause major bleeding, the appropriate dose is the lowest dose that is effective in preventing both MI and stroke because these two diseases frequently co-exist. I would strongly encourage you to talk your concerns over with your  cardiologist as each person's dose will vary according to their disease process and needs.
