Just back home after open Heart Surgery single bypass. tired, frustrated in pain any suggestions, to relieve this

Hi WillC,

I've never had surgery so I do not know how it feels. However, my father had triple bypass surgery and then double bypass surgery. He was in a lot of pain. He usually tried to stay still, did the lungs therapy and used the pillow on his chest when necessary.

I think the cut will take time to heal. You will feel better but you need to take it easy. You pain meds should give you some relief as well.

I hope you get some pain relief.

You have to stay ahead of the pain. After any surgery, and I had open heart last year, I set an alarm to take my pain meds every 4 hours, whether I have pain or not. The trick is to stay ahead, once you feel pain, it's harder to get in front of it.

Stay in front of it and you can be up and moving around, which will help you heal faster.

The sternum (breastbone) will be divided in half with a special operating instrument. The doctor will separate the two halves of the breastbone and spread them apart to expose the heart. This is one of the major issues why it will  take longer to heal from open heart surgery as cutting into your breastbone is like breaking any bone in your body and it takes time to heal.

I agree with staying ahead of your pain as it is easier to prevent fires than to put one out that is already raging.

Thanks everybody, I have learnt the hard way, do not stop your pain meds to early, been off them now for 12 days no pain except when siting at the dining table or similar type of seat, Ok in my lazy boy, still sleeping on my back most of the time had surgery six weeks ago

I heard that non-narcotic numbing medication is recommended in the days following the surgery but do not know much about its reliability. Have you ever heard of this?
