Generic vs. Brand Name Drugs

Excellent question!

 

Basically Brand name medications and Generics are pretty similar.  The differences from what I've learned are in the smaller type things, like...size, shape, color, texture (one may be liquid, another pill form).  Where it could be a question mark for some, is the filler-the inactive ingredient.  This may be different than the Brand name med.  It could contain lactose, or it may have sugar as it's inactive ingredient.  This may decide which drug you would take in some cases, if you have an allergy to it.

Me too, Jay. I am going to get it through jandrugs in Canada. I went to this link first. So, your dr does not prescribe the generic version? I swore I had asked my dr and he said there was no generic. Oops, here is the link: http://www.jandrugs.com/, and here is some of the info at the bottom of the page:

I'm not sure that this will help anyone, but I'm trying here! lol

 

I was looking up Carvedilol and came up with the following, Karvedilol,Carloc, Carvedilolum, Coreg, Dilatrend, Eucardic, Kredex, Carvedilol (generic name) .

 

Another name that I found in relation to Coreg and Carvedilol was Coropres.

 

Perhaps this will lead whoever is interested to something?!

Coreg and Carvedilol are both made by the same manufacturer.

Coreg (Carvedilol) GlaxoSmithKline.

 

So let's assume that while Cavedilol has been made available at a cheaper cost than their brand name of Coreg - perhaps there are other "generics" available from other companies that may bring that price down even lower?  I hope so!

I found this while doing a search for Coreg.

"CARVEDILOL (Coreg™) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers have many actions on the heart and blood vessels. Carvedilol is used for high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. Carvedilol controls, but does not cure, these conditions. I'm David, and work at a pharmacy company. It looks like you were left with a couple questions.
First, Why do we have a generic when your doctor says there isn't one?
There's always a generic of a drug, the question is whether it's approved for sale or still under patent. Since we're in Canada, and you're purchasing from Canada, it's Canadian patent laws that apply. Coreg is off patent in Canada.
The second is Is it legal? First we disagree with the FDA's position. Your purchase is taking place in Canada and is subject to the laws of Canada. We put the disclaimer at the request of Squaretrade, who is a pharmacy inspection company used by Yahoo and Google to determine who is permitted to advertise with them. The FDA's and US customs unoffical policy is that you can order from Canada as long as it's a medicine for your personal use, (as opposed to for resale), and you have a prescription.

thank you for the information, David! I didn't see your replies, or many of the other ones. I still have not actually sent to that pharmacy in Canada. But I want to.
