I have a blood pressure that according to the doctors is consistently high. 156/80 or very close thereto is my normal. I have tried 7 different blood pressure medications. All they do is make me ache all over. The muscles, joints, etc. I can hardly walk down the street. I am a 76yo w/m post 20 months on a TIA. I was otherwise healthy. I try the latest pill they put me on and within 6 or 7 hours I am in pain by the aches and joint pain. I quit the meds and within a day or two I am relatively back to normal I am diabetic, type II , however I keep the glucose relatively in check

Hi Jarason & welcome to Healing Well. I have been on blood pressure medications since I was 28 & am now 65. Over the course of the years I have been on numerous ones. After being on them so long, we often have to change to something different because they do not work. I have never had any of them affect me the way you are being affected. I am on Metololprol, Losartin & Norvasc. The Norvasc was added several years ago to work on the top number. This past February they increased the dose, it's helping.

The new guideline on BP is 120/80. Your top number is on the high side. I too have problems with the top number being elevated. Given your prior history I am sure the dr is concerned & should be. How is your cholesterol? The reason I am asking is a lot of times certain statins can cause what you are dealing with. Are you on a diurectic?

I wish I could offer up more, however I searched the archives here & couldn't come up with anything.

My Cholesterol for first time in years came within the normal range for the first time Total is 190. I know that is the top of the range but it is still normal. I have never take statin drugs but for a couple of days at a time for the reason they all made my joints hurt. I refused to discuss and they so noted my chart with a CYA comment.


about two years ago I went in to the Cardiologist as well as the internist with the comment: I have good news and bad news. Told both of them I quit all their meds and that I felt wonderful. Their response was you know the risk. Bought a bike and started riding up to 5 miles a day.


I had the TIA about 7 months later but I think it was from stress at my office. I had walked out the day prior and left fuming


Since the TIA I have gotten off Eliquis. various diabetes drugs, currently on Glimipiride. The worse of those was Invocana which I quit because of kidney problems. and of course the high blood pressure pills. None seem to work, just make me ache. I havn't had a BP med since Monday and here on Thursday I am feeling fine. I spent 5 hrs in the ER last night on the wife's behalf, for the wife starting at midnight and after all of that headache when I got home the BP was 138/72 at 68 pulse. When I have BP meds the pressure seems to go higher, when none it seems to go down.


I just don't have an answer and of course the doctors say you have to take or you are going to turn purple. Wish there was an answer.

how are your kidneys? they regulate blood pressure. egfr bloods may be a good idea. esp with diabetes, or previous. diabetes and kidney issues in combo are common.

Hello,, I’m martha. I’ve had BP problems for years. I’m very hard to treat. I’m on 3 pills at the moment. I have tried so many. Hydrochloride seems to help the best , but my doctor took me off of it, saying it’s bad for the kidneys. I don’t know why I have high BP, but I’m convinced these pills causes other problems. There are times it’s ok. Lately it been high 158/89 there if. Now I’m told my left atrium is dilated because of high BP . I’m so upset, scared about this. Any advice.

Hi Martha, what kind of doctor are you seeing for your high blood pressure? Who prescribed your medication? If you have any heart issues at all as you described, it would probably be best to see a cardiologist. Normally, most family physicians or internists are fine in taking care of and prescribing BP meds for their patients but if there's any kind of problem related to the heart at all, you should be seeing a cardiologist.
