just found out i have afib

hello everyone, my name is mark. not new to the group (healingwell) but i am new here. have my share
of aches and pains and spent some time in the chronic pain forum.
anyway two weeks ago visited my cardiologist for a 6 month check up(do have hbp), so he did the
ekg test and it came back saying i have atrial fibrillation. (thank you doc for the wonderful news)
so now he put me on eliquis 5mg 2x daily and amiodarone 200mg 1x daily. taking these for 4weeks
and if this doesn't work he wants to do a cardioversion. from looking this stuff up online looks
pretty cut and dry but i guess i'm looking for since this is all brand new to me, um anything i should
look out for or any info from you folks who have been there.oh also since i started taking these meds
seems like i'm way more tired then usual. thanks in advance for any info. look forward to talking to ya

Hi Mark, just to coment on Amiodarone - My dr put me on that for Arrythmia and I ended up in the hospital because i was loosing weight and falling down. Diagnosis was Hyperthyroidism which is a side effect from the pill. I was told that my Dr was suppose to monitor and do blood work to make sure everything was fine but he didnt. Also it can do something to your lungs (toxicity as I read). Just make sure you have your Dr do blood work. I also was always red and flushed with the medicine and had to stay out of the sun or I turned redder.(another side effect). Besides all this, that drug worked wonders for me. They had to take me off of it because of the Hypertyroidism and now anm on medication for life

You can be tired because it also lowers your heart rate.. happened to me as well which is normal

Hi Mark, it sounds like the Afib was caught early if you have been seeing the cardiologist regular. Depending on the severity, often the cardioversion will take care of it. Let's hope this happens for you. A friend of ours had this done & it put his heart back in rhythm & he never had another problem.

My husband saw a cardiologist for several years & dx'd with Afib. My husband wasn't concerned because his dr wasn't. He went many years untreated. He ended up with a new cardiologist thank goodness. They tried this procedure going in knowing there was a really good chance it would not work. But his dr felt it was worth trying. It did not work, but keep in mind he had no treatment & it got progressively worse over those years.

He ended up with a pacemaker & has done ok so far.

I had cardioversion two years, and subsequently had ablation done. Sounds like your cardiologist is on top of things, good luck!

hi susie and sharon, thanks for the reply and info. i have been seeing him regularly so yep i do have that to be thankful for. i've been seeing the same doc for quite a few years for my hbp. he was recommended from my family doctor. and so far things have been under control. plan on keeping it that way too. :0)

Amiodarone has many side effects so just be cautious on this drug. I can hardly go out in the sun bc I burn to a crisp. Also, blood work is a must, watch for any changes in your skin i.e. skin cancers, you can have eye problems so be sure & see an Ophthalmologist. At some point you may need a pacemaker.
I'm having a radio frequency ablation & lt. Atrium appendage closure the first of the year.
I also purchased an Alive Cor which you can use to monitor your AFib…This little device is how I knew I was in AFib.

good evening everyone. hope you all had a nice thanksgiving. well had a follow-up with my cardio doc and he had ordered some blood work. got my results and happy to say that all looks good. but unfortunately the meds he prescribed don't seem to be helping. so this friday (nov.30) i have to go in and have a cardioversion. he said they also want to do something called tee. he also said they would put me to sleep before hand so that's fine with me. my wife's uncle had that done (cv) and had mentioned the only issue he had was removing the pads. so hoping that all goes well. thank you sandi for your post. the two procedures your having, can i ask what those are? oh forgot, he also mentioned that if old sparky doesn't help, theres something where they burn something in or around the heart or something like that. thinking i might pass on that, doesn't sound very good. time to do some more research. time will tell. ok, wishing you a good night and healthy days ahead. take care everyone.

Mark, great to hear your labs look good. I hope the procedure works on November 30. Yes, you are given sedation for this procedure. My husband had his done around 8:00am, by 12:30 he was released & we went & had lunch. Now, if for some reason this does not work, by all means consider having the procedure the dr discussed, it's called an ablation. Your dr is on top of this. Ablations are very common now a days. It sounds scary, but lets be honest, anything to do with the heart is scary. My brother had this procedure & he did fine. This was 4 years after having his aortic heart valve replaced. He said I would rather do 10 ablations versus open heart surgery, lol. If you will look above SharonZ commented that she had the ablation done too. Best thing I can tell you is, take this a step at a time. Do not try to anticipate what is next, too stressful.

Initially, I was also nervous about the ablation. When they mentioned "burning" and "heart" in the same sentence, I didn't realize how common or simple the ablation procedure was. It was done as an outpatient, and I was home later in the afternoon.

hello thank you both for the encouraging words. turns out my wife's uncle had the cardioversion done and he said the worst part was removing the pads after it was over. i'm sure i would have the ablation done if i need too.
yes burning and heart in the same sentence does sound scary. all set for friday need to be there around noon. guess the worst part will be no coffee in the morning (LOL)
i'm assuming since they put me to sleep nothing after midnight. so i'll pass on some good news come saturday.

good morning all. well had my TEE and CV yesterday. happy to report that it went well. rhythm is back to normal (for now) and the tee images came back normal. so i go back to see the doc in about a week for a follow-up. would like to thank you all for your posts and well wishes. have a great day everyone. take care. mark

hello to everyone this evening. hope you all are doing fine and that 2019 is off to a good start and your holidays were good. well i have an update concerning my afib and the TEE results. i had mentioned in my last post that the TEE findings were good. well that was incorrect. i had a follow-up appt. a week and a half ago with my cardio doc and the ekg was normal, blood pressure and bpm were good and that seemed to be about the end of the appt. i had asked about how the TEE results were and it seemed that he didn't want to mention those so when i did ask he has said that i had leaky valves in the heart and also plaque build up in the aorta. so i thanked him for the wonderful news there(insert sarcasm here). so naturally i'm concerned about this. i'm no doctor but i'll bet that this isn't the greatest thing to hear when it concerns the ole ticker. any thoughts, concerns, comments would be greatly appreciated. well on a good note, he told me to reduce my

Did your doctor have any suggestions for you? My suggestion would be to seek a second opinion, it's always a good idea with potential heart issues.

Mark, I second what SharonZ said, get a 2nd opinion. Leaking valves can be treated various way, but it is the drs job to tell you what he recommends. What were his recommendations? I have valve issues & have been monitored for years. When I leave my cardiologist's office at the check out I am given a copy of my visit, along with test results. In additional to this, I have a patient portal to view information.
