An increase in score is "normal", meaning that's what most people experience. On the other hand, it means plaque is building up in arteries.
The current thinking is that the likely culprit is inflammation. Any number of factors can cause inflammation from dental disease to stress to diet to obesity and on and on. A big source of inflammation is glucose, which is why a low carb diet is often recommended. You also want HDL high, triglycerides low, and sdLDL low. LDL is likely not the direct cause of plaque.
