But my question is more along the lines of "is surgery the best option for an 80% blocked artery"?
I think the answer is, if the person is not going to change their lifestyle and not going to drastically change their diet, then yes - get a stent or bypass. But from all my reading, I think a whole foods, plant based diet along with other lifestyle changes is a better option.
When one has stents or bypass, they still have heart disease and haven't reduced the odds of a future heart attack or stroke. A plant based diet has been proven to stop and even reverse heart disease. The problem as I see it, is once you are diagnosed with heart disease, you are almost always directed down the path that leads to surgery.
One cardiologist flat out told me I couldn't reduce my cholesterol through diet and that niacin didn't work to lower cholesterol. My latest cholesterol readings were:
Tot chol: 129
HDL: 59
LDL: 54
Triglycerides: 77
I also did the Cleveland Heart Lab Inflammation Panel test which showed all levels of inflammation as low risk.
My point here is that cardiologists haven't been at all interested in cholesterol or inflammation now that they are excellent. I asked about
getting a cardiac calcium score or CIMT to measure plaque, but to a person said it wouldn't be helpful. How do they know if I still have plaque creation or if this is old plaque that is stable? On my own I arranged to have a CIMT which showed a lot of plaque, but no "soft" plaque, which is the most dangerous type.
Chol/HDL ratio: 2.2
