Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and normally post on the bipolar forum.I will have open heart surgery for a new aortic valve in Sept..Also , next week i will find out if they have to do bypass surgery at the same time.My question is, do I need a hospital bed for a couple of weeks after the surgery ? It seems that it is hard to get into or out of a regular bed after having your chest opened up.Thank you.

Hi Perfect Time, I would say yes on the bed for a few weeks. You will find laying flat is very difficult & you will do much better in a reclined position. You don't want anyone trying to help by pulling on you either. You will be taught how to hold onto someone or something to get up without hurting yourself. My brother already had an electric recliner that he slept. His recliner was much more comfortable than a hospital bed, so this may be something to consider.

Cardiac rehab a must. The huffing a tad brutal. Cough up the muck. Yes learn to get up..
Actually with no arm push. As soon as ya can.

Moving about real important for healing and blood flow.

Thank you guys.I was certainly hoping to have more feedback.There has to be a lot people in this forum that have had open heart surgery.Did you rely on a hospital bed or one of those electric levelling lazy boys for the first couple of weeks after the surgery, Thanks to all who can help me with my choice.

No. But slept propped up.

Still waiting.The surgery was delayed because of the Covid 19 flu. Should have it in the next 3-4 weeks(changing the aortic valve and 2 to 4 bypasses ).I did purchase an electric levelling recliner so I am waiting.I will get back to you after the operation.Thanks

Well I finally had my open heart surgery ( four bypasses and a new aortic valve).I was in I.C.U. for 3 days and 8 days in a regular room ..The first 3 days in the I.C.U. went by like a dream ( you are all hooked up and on pain medication ) .When i got to a regular care wing they showed me how to get in and out of bed,cough ,etc .Back home I slept in my electrical levelling chair and after 2 weeks in the chair I moved over to the bed . I had the surgery 5 weeks ago and I am getting stronger everyday .Started walking 10 minutes a day and I am now up to 40 minutes .Getting anxious to start a cardiac rehabilitation exercice program at my hospital ( in a few weeks .)

SOME ON YA WARD! YA DID WELL. I REMEMBER I WAS WIRED UP,.....BIG TIME, BUT I HAD ISSUES.
I WAS IN AND OUT IN ICU, THEN OUT-FOR MAJOR REPAIRS! LOL.
KEEP STRONG, HT. CAPS, VISION BAD.

Perfect Time glad to read the surgery is behind you! It sounds like you are doing very well, keep up the good work. The cardiac rehab is great too. When my brother went he met some great people & they were very supportive to each other.
