Blood pressure that is 130/90 is considered bordeline high today. That is why your doctor is wanting you to get a handle on it through diet and exercise. Once it is consistently 140/90+ it is considered high and they usually start trying medication. Consistently high blood pressure over time begins doing damage to your organs they say and puts you at higher risk for heart problems.
However many people don't like doctor's offices and have what it called "white coat syndrome". That means that their blood pressure is high in the doctor's office but normal at home or during the day. Many doctors will ask a patient to keep track of their blood pressure away from the doctor's office and let them know what it runs. No need to go on medication unneccessarily!!! They find that many patient's blood pressure is fine away from the doctor's office.
You are doing the right thing by keeping track of it at home. When you go in to his office and it is high show him your readings from home. That should keep your doctor happy! Just don't fudge on the numbers or play the "I'll keep this reading but throw out that reading" game! It will not be helpful to your health in the long run.
By the way, they have found that many people with borderline high blood pressure readings can control blood pressure by simply doing relaxation techniques once or twice a day. COOL! That's easy, cheap and feels good!!!!!! Better than meds IMO.
