Hi jimo, Welcome to Healing Well forum, we are glad to have you.  I'm not to sure what your wanting answered here?  If you have had a defibrillators implant normally the reason for the "shock" is for it to put your heart back into a normal rhythm.  Are you looking for information on defib's and what kind of symptoms and side effects they cause when they are active?

I had a series of three shocks within a few seconds while taking a shower, after spending time with a lady friend. That was 8 months ago, shortly after having the implant. Kinda' gives new meaning to "just say no". I was more angry than worried. Please DO follow your doctor's advise. My Doc. said I was good to go, I took it she meant that I was OK. I can dump a whole horror story on you, the past year. Not here. Not now. I am working through other issues, and Darn it, they can't take away my sense of humor. I don't have oxygen at night because my insurance was canceled. I hope I don't see ya in the depression forum. Best wishes and prayers.

hi there, my dad just had a pacemaker defibulator inplanted 2 weeks ago. we are concerned about the shock therapy. does it hurt? what acutally happens. he is 73 years old and i know he is worried and so am i. he is reading the handbook of the inplant device and i know it is scaring him. thought anybody with any info could help. thanks

I have had a defib for over 2 years and counting.  Make sure you know the maker of the device and check out their website.  I am  happy to tell you that I haven't gotten shocked :)  But, if I do, it will be doing it's job.   I had a 3 bypass w/2 v-fibs....no, I don't remember it.  Whew!   I have fibro which means I feel anything/everything in my body. But most people don't pay much attention to the implant.   My defib gets checked every 3 months if that helps you.   When they check it, I generally cough and get a bit sick in my stomach....again, that's me.   It's much easier then getting your teeth cleaned to be honest.    Takes about 10 minutes.   What happens when you get shocked?  Depends upon what your heart is doing.  I stay away from power lines and engines when I am walking.  Hope this helps to ease some fears.   I am assuming your Dad had a heart attack...if not, device keeps me running even because my heart attacks.

hello Annieinoz, thanks for for input. his inplant is from medtronics. what do you mean stay away from power lines and engines, what kind of engines? do cordless phones and cell phones bother? this is all so new to us. yes my dad had a heart attack. the first one was 20 yrs ago 5 bypasses. he had 2 minor ones, and now this one which was a close one. I thank my lord for saving him again.they could not do any other procedures like the angiogram or any stents, so they put this device in him. i guess to make sure his heart doest stop beating. i hope this works for him. it sounds like you are okay with this device you have. hope so. thanks for your support. I have a metronic as well.   Checkout the metronic site.  Yes, it's to regulate his heart beat.  Sometimes other devices you might use can mess with the device as the site tell you. Such as a cell phone. I had a stroke from medication right after my heart surgery.  Thus, we had a life-threating situation again.   You can see why I have the defib at this point.  So, for me...it's is certainly worth it.  Glad you can help educate your Father.  Since I am a stroke victim, I couldn't write this out for you for many months.   It takes lots of education to deal with having the heart attack, let alone not understanding or being able to relate it back with speech.  Seems like your helping with the education and the fear.   Blessing, Annie
