Hi I am new to this forum and have some questions and concerns that maybe someone can help me with.

 

I have treatment resistant depression and narcolepsy.  Both of these ailments have been part of my life for over 20 years.  Lately, the past 2-3 months I have experienced symptoms that have gone unspecified.  Tests have been done repeatedly to find causes or reasons for what is going on.  Some of the things are passing out with little or no warning(this has seemed to stop over the past month), vision changes(sometimes loss of peripheral vision). 

 

The most severe symptoms that actually has me concerned is my blood pressure.  Over the past couple months it has been right around 150-180 over 100-104.  Although the past couple days it has been 162/110.  This has been confirmed by different blood pressure devices.  Being in the medical field I know that this is extremely serious but I guess I just dont think about it because I have no physical symptoms related to my bp.

 

The only thing is that I dont know if this could cause me to have an infarction.  My ekgs have been normal.  I guess I am just frustrated because "clinically" I am fine with all this going on!  It almost looks like I am making everything up with the exception of my bp showing that I am not.  I actually told someone that I am dying of a broken heart. 

 

Any thoughts?

Dear Teresa,

This is definitely not good. Why would you want to wait for a physical symptom to occur? It is not good for any organs-not only the heart, but your kidneys as well. It can damage your arteries. Make an appointment with your doctor. There are many good meds available today if he or she confirms hypertension. Please do this yesterday, OK?

Thank you for your reply.  I know what you are saying about the physical but I am dealing with my depression that is so bad i have a hard enough time taking care of my children and their needs. I just dont understand why after all these months with this that there is no symptoms.  Maybe it is benign and means nothing.

 

I do have a doctors appt in a couple weeks, if he doesnt seem concerned then obviously there is not a problem, right?

Dear Teresa,

If you are using a digital blood pressure machine, take it along with you to the doctor and see if it is close. Perhaps, the devices you are using are not well calibrated, I don't know.

I have not heard of benign hypertension, but there are some that suffer from white-coat hypertension (doctor's office) I don't think it would run that high though. I do believe you should address this problem. I don't know if you're seeing a specialist for your other conditions, but at least mention what you've posted here and see what response you get. You may need to see another doctor to treat your hbp.

I am sorry your depression is so bad, I'm sure that zaps alot of your strength. I would suggest you mention your concerns to the doctor and not wait for him to say something. You do not want to wait for symptoms, as they generally appear after damage has occurred. Whether or not the machines you've been using are accurate, addressing this will give you one less thing to worry about! I wish you well!

Sorry about the depression Faithfully.  It sounds like you are being treated for a couple of things.  I have fibro, plus the heart attack/stoke. You don't seem to be clinically ok by looking at blood pressure stats.  Whatever your age, that's not where it needs to me.   I certainly have known older people who struggled with up/down BP, but you don't what to be there.    Are you having bad headaches perhaps?   Do hope you go to the doctor sooner.   If you use the "same" device for the BP all the time...not the thing in a drug store....you can track it a during the day.  Hope your better.

sad  Thank you guys very much for your input.

 

I went to the doctor yesterday and he states that since my bp is not consistently running extremely high such as 200/100 he is not really concerned.  He says that if it would stay at that for more than three weeks that then there might be a concern.  My bp goes really high and then high, never normal.  I have noticed that when I dont take my ritalin for my narcolepsy, my bp is not as high.  There is a correlation there but I cant do without that medicine.

 

It was left at that until we get my depression under control, my biggest fear is that we dont address this "bizarre" bp and that something happens to me.   Probably just being highly-sensitive.

Interesting dx.   You can always check your own bp now and then if you have a machine that is working and go ahead and record it.  I understand that you are taking some drugs that would likely cause some problems.   When you go to your m.d. you can give them the stats you have. They are more responsive to facts.  You have lots to deal with and I wouldn't want to cause you more anxiety, but I don't want you to not go to the ER if you have symtoms.  All the best with this.   Hoping the depression eases soon.
