I'm just curious -- how many of you were smokers before your heart attacks?

How many of you still smoke after your heart attack?

Hi tomah,  I havent had a heart attack but, I do have some serious heart problems.  I am 33 (almost 34 skull ) and have bradycardia & sick sinus syndrome in which I have had a pacemaker implant 1& 1/2 yrs ago.  I also have a Vent. Septal Defect.

I had smoked since I was 18 on and off...mostly on.  I managed to quit a month before doctors found my heart problems and didnt smoke for well over a year.  I was warned that if I started to smoke they would have to go in and fix the septal defect.  Well, despite everything I know about my condition I did start again.  Stupid I know but it is one of the hardest things to stop and stay stopped.  I tell myself almost everyday that tomorrow I will not smoke but for all my good intentions that is really all they are is intentions....who knows, maybe tomorrow.

I smoked until around 42 and quit.  Late in life, started smoking a bit and then..quit!!  Way too expensive to be honest.  Then, I had a triple bypass at 62 and also have a defib because of a couple more V-fibs and a stroke.  You decide?   The first time quitting is the worse..after that, you really don't want it to beat you.

Thanks for your posts.  I guess there aren't too many people on here that smoked - or are still smoking (or don't want to admit it) LOL.  I just got a prescription for Chantix.  I have a 100% blocked RCA with collaterols - but it is time to quit before other arteries get blocked.

Hi Tomah!I am also a smoker.I have not had a heart attack,but I do have cardiomyopathy.I smoked for about 12 years before pregnancy,got dx'd w/ cardio about 3 months later ,then for some stupid reason,I started back up after the dx.Unfortunately,I use smoking to keep me from blowing my low-sodium diet.Excuses!Excuses!!I hope to quit one day soon!Does your cardio doc know you smoke?Mine doesn't & I've been to chicken to fess up & ask about chantix.

I have heard good things about chantix & know several people who have had success w/it.Best wishes!

Hi tomah! It's been a while since I have posted anything here. I do still smoke, even after quad bypass surgery at age 44 and a balloon placed last year. I just cant seem to stop. I just found out I have emphysema, and I am still smoking. I know its so stupid of me to still smoke, but i have been smoking for 35 yrs. I have cut back quite a bit, so maybe someday.
