Kathlyn - I believe it does not help GERD. In fact when they use nitro diagnostically - it's how they differentiate other symptoms from heart related symptoms - if the pain is alleviated by nitro - it's your heart.

Esophageal spasm is often difficult to treat.
Nitroglycerin
Some Trade Names
NITRO-BID
NITROL
, long-acting nitrates, anticholinergics such as
dicyclomine
Some Trade Names
BENTYL
, or calcium channel blockers such as
nifedipine
Some Trade Names
ADALATPROCARDIA
may relieve the symptoms by relaxing the muscles of the esophagus.

I didn't mean to infer that it treated GERD itself, but the symptoms that can be similar such as bronchiole spasms and esophageal spasms that mimic angina, seem to also be helped by Nitro.
In fact, my allergy Dr. 7 yrs. ago, told me that as it's so hard to distinguish between them, to take the Nitro, because even though it might be my asthma instead of angina, it would help the spasms and perhaps calm the asthma a bit.

I think next time I'll refrain from making any 'statements' without my source at hand (you're training us well, Teri!)
That was a good article, and I had never read about
GERD before. Jeeeeez, what misery that must be - I'm so sorry for anyone who has to deal with it.
Hope everybody's having a good day.
hugs,
Oona

Hi Oona!! It's okay...I've learned a lot of my info the hard way. Either, I've had the disease/illness myself, or someone close to me has had it. With my forgetfulness though, I do like to find a solid source first to back me up!
lol We can all learn from each other and I certainly appreciate a lot of the info that you've shared with us here!
Big
Hugs, Teri xoxoxo
