TIA's or a Small Stroke

Have any of you suffered from TIA's, or a small stroke?  I actually have a question.

 

After I had my bypass in August 2004 I did have a small stroke, with only subtle changes.  I had some left arm discomfort and some tingling in the left hand, along with numbness and tingling of the left side of my face~actually that's what bothered me the most.

 

It lasted several months then went away for the past month or two.  Last night it came back. confused And right now it's been hitting me for a while.  Is this normal?

 

I've already called my PCP and his nurse says they don't know what's going on and just want me referred to a neurologist.  So they're putting in the call now.  I'll keep you posted.

 

But if you know...let me know! yeah

Okay, I guess that was putting ya'll on the spot a bit, but I was sort of scared at the time as to what was happening to me...hoping I wasn't having another stroke.

 

I never heard back from any neurologist's office and will be speaking to my Dr. tomorrow about that, or looking for another Dr.!

 

I called my Cardiac Dr. within a short amt. of time and talked to his RN who told me that seeing a neurologist was the best thing to do and she suspected it was still "post stroke effect" from my last stroke.  So I felt reassured and the cardiac Dr. will call me tomorrow.  She just left me with one big warning.  If any of the symptoms changed, or got worse, bypass them all and go straight to the ER.

 

So you see, I didn't waste a lot of time and anyone can have a problem with a Dr. not being there to answer your questions~I'll keep ya posted!

Gosh Teri, what a fright for you! I've never experienced this. I'm glad you feel reassured now and hope you get your neuro appointment soon. Let us know.

Teri, i use to get the mini strokes alot when i was on toprol xl and a lot of other meds. I did get a referral to a neurologist. She ran so many tests it was frightening.

Like you said, i had facial ticks and sometimes slight pain in my face. My left arm kept hurting, finally i went to the er, and the er dr told me they can stop a stroke if caught within 60 mins.

Now when i have any kind of facial pain, i just go to the Urgent care facility who then decide if i need to go to the ER. Strokes are really serious biz, i would go for help now if my facial pain last for more than 20 mis. Good luck and take care of yourself.

I did recheck with my Dr.'s office today...boy it was one of those days, but I think I'd need to write a book about it. :)

The head nurse, the one that you put complaints into just happens to be my Dr.'s nurse.  She answered the phone when I called and told me that there are only 3 neurologists in this area and 2 of them are booked solid for 2 months out!  The third one, the one that I saw after my first stroke hasn't answered his phone and they sent him a fax re all this yesterday.  She told me she herself is on top of this and if anything more happens to just head to the ER.  So I asked her about my referral for the pulmonologist from a month ago and much to her embarassment she found that my chart had been returned to the shelves and no one had followed through on that appt.  I'd already called back on that as well at an earlier date and was informed that "I'd be called when they got the appt."

So the nurse told me she'd take care of this for me.  I've not heard anything and probably won't know til next week, since it's Friday already.  But I am feeling okay.

Well, I did get a call from my Neurologist's office nurse this morning and I have an appt. at 10 AM tomorrow morning. Seems she (the nurse) was on vacation last week and things were a bit erratic there...though she did remind me that from now on, I can come in at any time in the future, I'm not new to this Dr. so I don't need a referral. So hopefully all will be uphill from here! :)

The neurologist that I saw earlier today is considering that I did have a stroke and said it may have something to do with seizure activity.  He was going to put me on seizure medications, but I wondered why, when it had not been verified as yet.  So he told me if I have a 3rd one, I'll be going on to other med.'s and that for now we'll wait for my test results on my carotid artery ultra sound in about a week or so to make sure that's not what is causing the problem.  I was told migraines can even cause strokes.  There is so much to learn out there re all this that, I guess I'll have a lot of reading to do! yeah

Girlfriend I love you and wish i cuold answer yuor questions I now I get my aginia in my upper back and bad headaches in the back of my head when my BP is up but when I had my silent heart attack in Nov 2003 for weeks before I was dizzy and felt like pin and needles on my right side not my left when the darn doctors Pa misdiagnosed me and gave my  IB for back pain when in turn I was haveing silent heart attacks. all i have is a quarter size of damage now and she tells me I am lucky that someone up above muist really love me. Now hear me  teri someone in Fla loves you and needs her in her life too such a wonderful moderator to everyone and take care of yourself like yu tell everyone put yurself first and dear girlfriend next time this happens donot pass stop or go get in the car and have someone take you to the hospital or call 911 ok Teri

So many types of stroke, is it something else, or the real deal?

I've just heard that you can have strokes from Migraines, Seizures and now a Stroke called a R.I.N.D. (Reversible Ischemic Neurological Deficit).  It's considered a small stroke and has all the same symptoms of a stroke, sometimes the symptoms lasting 24 hours to as long as 3 weeks-wow!

There's a Hemmorhagic stroke, caused by a weakened blood vessel rupturing.

An Ischemic stroke is when a clot breaks loose in a blood vessel in the brain and causes the blood flow to the brain to be stopped.

There are TIA's (Transient Ischemic Strokes) which usually don't last as long and are called a "mini stroke".

As I posted in another post today, I have an appt. tomorrow, Fri. with my cardiologist so that he can discuss what all is going on with me re the strokes. I will keep you all posted...Hugs, Teri :)

MY father in law had the TIA's and his cardio told him that is leading up to  a stoke and doing to much he got tired lied down then got dizzy and he forgets after that he had a pacemaker for 2 years then suffered a major heart attack and died in taco bell  in Nov 2002 at the age of 82 and he was felling dizzy and headaches but he put off going to the doctor to get his wife a taco. Thanks, Heidi. I'm going to be scheduled to have an MRI of the brain and then have my anual US (ultra sound) of the carotid arteries next week. Slowly, but surely they'll figure this out...Teri :)

Just a quick note...I'm going in at 8 AM in the morning (Wed. 4rth) and I'm having an EEG done. They want me sleep deprived, so I'm sure tomorrow will be a long day! Hugs, Teri :)

Ack!  I've done a sleep dep EEG...the only thing that kept me awake was a friend of mine online...we chatted all night.  I hope it goes well for you Teri!

I had a scare the other night I had a headache for about 3 days in the middle of the nigh i woke up with a funny feeling my heart was racing and my right arm
was getting numb i felt something was wrong i took an aspirin and went the to bed but woke up dizzy and like was drunk so i went to my doctor and he sent me to the hospital they left me for 3 days had an mri and a cat scan i found out today that it was a small stroke i fell very fatigued and tired i just wonder how long would it take for me to get better?

Hi, I had a possible TIA recently but the doctor refused to do a test to check it.  I have several heart problems & am trying hard to get the right treatment ..it's great to 'meet' all of you & know it's not just me going thru these symptoms!  hang in there every1, dont give up :)

I had a small stroke  in 2001.   I was in the hospital for a week and it probably took about 3 or 4 months before I was totally back to normal.   I was taken to the hospital by ambulance when I woke from a nap after laying down with an excruciating headache.   Only problem was, the left side of my body was paralyzed.   I continued to be fatigued and continued to experience weakness in the left side of my body for a few months after I was released from the hospital.    Thankfully today there are no residual effects.
