Billy Dunwoody,Good Evening. I am sorry to read of your Mothers irregular ECG pre-op but glad to hear the Drs. are going to investigate further to see what her problem may be before they go ahead with surgery. An Echocardiogram is a great diagnostic tool and hopefully any issues will be identified by this test.
An EKG also known as an electrocardiogram or ECG is a test that measures problems in electrical activity within the heart. An EKG shows the heart’s electrical activity on a piece of paper in the form of lines. The spikes and dips are also known as waves.
However, an EKG is not very accurate in evaluating the pumping ability of the heart. For that, an echocardiogram is recommended. An echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound of the heart. It shows the internal structure, and how the blood flows through it. The echo measures the size and shape of the heart, how well the valves are functioning, how the left and right side communicate, and the velocity of the blood leaving the heart.
The echo is used to diagnose coronary artery disease, heart valve disorders, enlargement or thickening of the heart muscle.
I am sorry but we do not interpret ECG(EKG) in the forum as we are not professionals and this is the job of a medical doctor. We are strictly a peer support group so any comments or opinions are strictly our own personal experience.
We are here to support you and your Mother as she goes through her tests. She is fortunate to have you as her advocate so ask those questions of the cardiologist until you feel you understand exactly what is going on.
Let us know how your Mom is doing. We care.
Kindly,
Kitt
